Charles the Good

Fun fact, by the way, the guy who took over for Baldwin in Flanders was a man named Charles.

He would come to be called Charles the Good, and this Charles was actually the great-nephew of the one and only Cnut the Great, king of both Denmark and England exactly one century earlier.

So hey, the more you know, right? But either way, Henry made serious inroads with Flanders by way of bribes and gifts meant to keep Flanders at bay.

He knew it probably wasn't permanent, but any respite is better than no respite.

It's almost a year.

He nominates his cousin Charles the Good to succeed him and of course Henry immediately bribes him into neutrality.

So Flanders is out of the war.

Clito is forced now to take refuge with Louis because he had been in Flanders with Baldwin.

And publicly declared his formal claim to Normandy.

This is getting good.

His position became even stronger when, following the murder of Charles the Good of Flanders, Louis rushes in and cajoles the nobles of Flanders into accepting Clito as their new Count of Flanders.

He's getting another job.
