Captain Conway.

not me too cried babs with a dawning fear no dearie said nana lovingly but we'll only be gone a day or two oh i would so have joyed the funeral cried babs why didn't they want me too there there miss dearie don't fret funerals aren't nice for little girls which sounded as if nurse thought them delightful for every one else i wish i was going too continued babs wailing but nana came to the rescue with kisses of comfort and suggested that the little girl should sail boats during her bath and this was a stroke of genius on the part of nurse babs distress vanished as if by magic and judging from the shouts of laughter and splashing which emerged from the bathroom during her ablutions the trouble was apparently quite forgotten for happily children's sorrows though perhaps as keen as those of their elders are nothing like so long-lived teddy was not nearly so excitable as his little sister and took the news of his coming journey very calmly he methodically set about packing his best top and paint-box in case he wanted either of them at the funeral and nurse attended to such details as clothes after the children were safe in bed they both sat up till nearly eight o'clock on this memorable occasion and babs was spared the anguish of that half-hour which usually came after her bedtime and before her brother's teddy she called the last thing just before nana shut the night nursery door s'pose the eggs hatch while you're away what must i give them to eat bread and milk said teddy and just a few warms mixed with it you remember how our last starting but one enjoyed bread and milk and warms now children no more talking or i shall have to shut master teddy's bedroom door i'se rather glad after all that i'll be home in case those eggs do hatch murmured babs to herself it would be so lonesome for the little ones without me for their mother and the dear little mother soul within her rejoiced that no pleasure of hers should interfere with her loving maternal duties which is the way of mothers chapter one CHAPTER II.

UNCLE CHARLIE.

but teddy and nana did not come back again soon four five long summer days went by and babs was still alone at cloverdale she was enjoying herself immensely it was such a treat going down to tea in the servants hall such fun helping giles all day to garden and listening to his thrilling conversation uncle charlie was the never-failing theme giles waxed so eloquent on the heroic conduct of british soldiers and babs caught his spirit and tone in a manner which even indulgent nana would have noticed and rebuked at last a letter came to cook telling her to prepare for captain conway who was coming down to cloverdale that very night it was very tiresome that he would not arrive till long after babs was asleep but on the following morning directly she knew that he had gone downstairs she rushed into the dining-room in ecstatic anticipation of her introduction to this heroic soldier uncle a slight fair young man sat at the table pouring out a cup of tea where's my soldier uncle asked babs aghast with an anxious little quaver in her voice i want to see him good gracious is that really the girl thought captain conway as he looked at the sturdy brown little maiden before him and looked in vain for some likeness to that lovely stately woman who was his brother's wife i want my uncle charlie she repeated impatiently you can go away strange man but look here child i am your uncle charlie don't you know me how could she have known him when he had been in india for the whole five years of her short life but he could not think of anything else to say this first appearance of his niece had so greatly disconcerted him the boy was so pretty and graceful and taking that both his uncle and aunt were delighted with him and captain conway had vaguely expected that when he went to cloverdale a trim-looking maid would have brought to him a well-dressed golden-haired fairy kind of child who would have kissed him prettily and lisped out some polite orthodox greeting instead of which the door had been flung open and transfixed at the sight of him a square brown plain untidy little creature had stood on the threshold impatiently demanding that he should go away and that her uncle charlie should come i am your uncle charlie then as if to himself imagine this being barbara's child to his great surprise the little girl stamped her foot in a sudden frenzy of passion go away nasty strange man she repeated they told me my uncle was a soldier and i's not a barbara child they calls me babs it is all right i am a soldier he said soothingly and i have come all this way from london to see you i thought you'd be zackly like this she explained drawing nearer and the smart young officer looked with amazement on a hideous advertisement for recruits which portrayed a red-cheeked soldier blowing a trumpet and

They all made a rush at her the moment she appeared, but Alice ran her hardest and soon found herself in a thick wood.

End of chapter 2 CHAPTER III Advice from a Caterpillar the first thing i've got to do said alice to herself as she wandered about in the wood is to grow to my right size and the second thing is to find my way into that lovely garden i think that will be the best plan it sounded an excellent plan no doubt and very neatly and simply arranged the only difficulty was that she had not the smallest idea how to set about it and while she was peering anxiously among the trees round her a little sharp bark just over her head made her look up in a great hurry an enormous puppy was looking down at her with large round eyes and feebly stretching out one paw trying to reach her poor thing said alice in a coaxing tone and she tried hard to whistle to it but she was terribly alarmed all the while at the thought that it might be hungry in which case it would probably devour her in spite of all her coaxing hardly knowing what she did she picked up a little bit of stick and held it out to the puppy whereupon the puppy jumped into the air off all its feet at once and with a yelp of delight rushed at the stick and made believe to worry it then alice dodged behind a great thistle to keep herself from being run over and the moment she appeared at the other side the puppy made another dart at the stick and tumbled head over heels in its hurry to get hold Then Alice, thinking it was very like having a game of play with a cart-horse, and expecting every moment to be trampled under its feet, ran round the thistle again.

Then the puppy began a series of short charges at the stick, running a very little way forwards each time, and a long way back, and barking hoarsely all the while, till at last it sat down a good way off, panting, with its tongue hanging out of its mouth, and its great eyes half shut.

this seemed to alice a good opportunity for making her escape she set off at once and ran till the puppy's bark sounded quite faint in the distance and till she was quite tired and out of breath and yet what a dear little puppy it was said alice as she leant against a buttercup to rest herself and fanned herself with her hat i should have liked teaching it tricks if i'd only been the right size to do it oh i'd nearly forgotten that i've got to grow up again let me see how is it to be managed i suppose i ought to eat or drink something or other but the great question is what The great question certainly was what.
