Can you talk to me a little bit about how you think about, you know, uh, the inclusivity of both your work and the universe itself?

Yeah, you know, I think with The Disordered Cosmos, that book was really both a love note to the cosmos and also, like, a very critical love note to the physics and astronomy communities about what's broken about how physics and astronomy are done and, and how that impacts people.

And so it's like a very holistic look at the doing of particle cosmology, right? And so I think there, talking about how our identity ends up as part of the story happened very naturally because that was actually part of the original plan of the book, was to talk about how the practice of science is shaped by identity and how people react to identity and, and what we would call ascribed identity, so race, gender, sexual orientation, gender presentation, like, all of these things.

One of the challenges I face is that The Disordered Cosmos was critically successful, which I really appreciate, and I particularly appreciate that I got readers who didn't usually pick up books about science and particularly didn't usually pick up books about physics and astronomy who were reading my book.

I wrote with Black readers in mind, and particularly Black women readers and Black and queer readers because I wanted to say we deserve to have books that are written with us in mind.

And in a way, I wrote to my 17-year-old self.

I read Carl Sagan's Cosmos, like, over and over in college, and that was one of the ways that in difficult moments I found, okay, there is meaning in this stuff even if I feel like I'm experiencing racism and sexism in the classroom.

Yeah, you know, it can be hard to talk about this at this point because I always want to tell people that me introducing the term white empiricism led to lots of people providing evidence for its existence.

So I started reading a lot of feminist philosophy of science and an interesting thing about it is that they would often talk about how the social and the political can shape what we know about things.

And even the stories that we tell, I think a very famous example within science, technology and society circles is for example, thinking of the sperm as attacking the egg and how this kind of genders the sperm and genders the egg and particular narratives about like what a man does and what a woman does.

And how if we didn't think in those terms that we might understand the dynamic between sperm and egg differently.

So this is like an example of how the gendered metaphor that we use kind of shapes our way of thinking about the scientific process and the actual thing that's happening.

I think on a deeper level, there's a piece of this that, you know, I consider myself to be working in the Black radical tradition and in the Black feminist tradition.

Gravity is the first force that we ever meet in, in a physics education, and it's the one that we consciously live with in everyday life.

So on, on a level in terms of thinking about this question of what happens when you try and put quantum into conversation with gravity, these are two different frameworks that are trying to solve two different problems, and then you're saying, "Well, what if I think about the problem together?" So for example, I wanna understand the structure of space time at the microscopic particle-like scale.

And then you run into some serious mathematical difficulty because the question is, is space time, does it have gaps? What does it...

What, what would that mean? How do we write down the math for it? And there's really a whole universe out there of, of ways that people are thinking about the quantum gravity problem.

But I do think it can be helpful to understand that maybe framing them through the metaphor of a clash or a war is not the right way to do it because they're not fighting with each other.
