There was a time when calling CFRY meant dialing just five numbers.

Today, that might sound strange, but in 1961, Portage la Prairie was in the middle of a major change to the way people made telephone calls.

I started with the telephones in September of '46.

That's Bill Stuen, who worked with the telephone system for almost 37 years.

He started in 1946 and eventually settled in Portage, where he helped install telephones throughout the area.

He even installed one of CFRY's first telephones in the basement of the Portage Hotel.

But telephone service in the 1950s and early '60s was very different from what we know today.
