Cerebus the Aardvark

I am one of your hosts, Rob Kelly, and we're here to talk about independent comics.

American Flag, John Sable Freelance, Cerebus, Twisted Tales, Mac and Cheese, Cherry Pop-Tart.

We'll talk about it all.

And joining me, our fellow network all-stars, the irredeemable Shag.

You know what I mean? There's so many companies.

I don't even know.

So to me, it's like, was it in black and white? Did it cost probably twice as much for half the number of pages? Then it's an independent comic, like Cerebus, right? Cerebus looked nothing like a DC and Marvel comic.

And that to me read as, quote unquote, independent.

But all of this kept going through me.

You know, could it be Concrete? Could it be Cerebus? Could it be Love and Rockets? Uh, could it be Nexus? Because these were the titles that, that, that really satiated a hunger for me.

Uh, uh, th- they, they quenched my thirst in, in the '80s as a teenager when I just could not get enough comics, and Marvel and DC weren't enough.

So the, uh, creator-owned titles, such as these that I've shared, that were coming out from Eclipse Comics, from Kimiko, from First, from Dark Horse, uh, from Warp Graphics, all of these different, you know, titles really inspired me and, uh, kept me going and, and, and were, w- as he said, legacy works.

There's a little bit of it in 3.

Published in late 1985 and early 1986, it's followed up by the Cerebus crossover, which was a more normal thing to do at that time.

This is old Cerebus before, you know...

And that introduces Lord Simultaneous, Renee, and Savanti Romero, who will all play an important role in trans-dimensional TMNT.

But that's for another time.

The Jeff Smith joke in Bone issue one or two, two I think it is, is one of the funniest jokes anyone has ever written anywhere.

Moments of Cerebus.

When Dave Sim wanted to be funny, especially in the 1980s, he was capable of writing the funniest comic book there ever was.

Dave decided he had other things he wanted to do, so things went a different direction.

But both of those comics, Bone and Cerebus, have plenty of laugh out loud moments.

And hey, I'll throw in Amelia Rules.

I have no problem saying I think Amelia Rules is an extremely funny comic book.

Keep it breezy.

Mm-hmm.

I've read some early Cerebus.

So, I mean, I've read some of the highlights of the indie scene of the '80s.

But, uh, Concrete was not one of them.

I could

see, you know, Dave Simmons, Cerebus, one of the three missions.

Yeah, I mean, you could have done something maybe with New Gods.

But other than that, it's like...

The only reason to not be a communist is that you hate working people.
