Central District

Omari Salisbury is the founder of Converge Media.

It's a local news outlet he started to cover Seattle's historically Black Central District.

But once the protests kicked off, his live streams captured the most comprehensive view that we have into the events before and after Antonio arrived in Seattle.

Four days after the protests started, protesters decided they were gonna march past the East Precinct.

The East Precinct is about four blocks in front of us.

That's the Seattle Police precinct that covers the historically young, gay, activist-heavy neighborhood of Capitol Hill, and also the historically Black neighborhood that Omari grew up in, the Central District.

The energy of the protests had been converging here.

But there is specifically in this $19.5 million, there is $5 million to build a new tiny home village.

King County is partnering with the low-income housing institute known as Lehigh, notorious homelessness agency, to open an 80-unit tiny home village in early 2027 in Seattle's Central District neighborhood.

I am sure that the Central District is thrilled to be getting a tiny house village there.

It'll be called the Spruce Street Tiny House Village.

It says it'll operate as an enhanced shelter and will include 80 tiny houses, a community kitchen, community space, children's play area.

Here's what Girmay Zahalai had to say specifically about the tiny house funding.

$5 million for Spruce Street Tiny Home Village in Seattle's Central District that would create 80 tiny homes in partnership with Lehigh.

She had moved out in May of 1989 due to her cocaine addiction and began prostituting herself.

She spent most of her time in the Central District of Seattle and had twice been arrested for prostitution.

She was 36.

Marta's husband, last heard from her on the evening of either March 5th or 6th, 1990.

According to detectives who were with him on this trip, Ridgeway directed them to almost the exact location where Shelly's remains were found.

Ridgeway could not provide any specific details concerning Shelly.

He recalled that she was just a white woman, picked her up on Highway 99 or maybe Central District.

Ridgeway also said he picked her up and killed her at night.

Now, one project I've sort of been... trying to do since I've got here is learn a little bit more about the history of Seattle theater.

And I was really interested in this exhibition and I had a great conversation with a gentleman named T. Denard, who was a member of Black Arts West, which was this theater group that existed in Seattle in the Central District from 1968 to 1980.

They produced 75 plays.

Hmm.

So at that point, we'll make that public.

And then I will make a decision about that expansion of cameras into the stadium district and also the central district and Capitol Hill nightlife area.

We want to talk, too, about, you know, your office released a trove of messages on Friday.

A treasure trove.

How do you meet the middle and prevent our extinction in Seattle?

What's your answer, Mayor? Yeah, so I feel like you asked me several questions and all of them were good, but I'm going to focus on, you know, I think you're talking about how homeowners in the Central District, Black homeowners, you know, people who have lived in Seattle for a long time and now are struggling with mortgages, with property taxes, and maybe a threat of being displaced.

We absolutely need to do more there.

Who knows what the heck else I was doing? And you can imagine some of the things you do on drugs.

We're in the Central District in downtown Seattle, okay? In the wrong area, with the wrong people, in the wrong cars, in the wrong apartments, okay? On a consistent basis.

staying up till 3, 4 in the morning in downtown Seattle.

I mean, you know, it was just, I couldn't believe some of the things that I was doing during that time.
