I
4:15
couldn't agree with you more that the five inner resources that I summarize are based on 40 years of my clinical experience and a lot of research that's been done.
4:26
And that I tried to summarize and make it easy for the average person to understand what are the most important things that we need to develop within ourselves in order to have a stronger foundation from which to live our life.
4:39
I've summarized them as a healthy sense of self, which includes things like a healthy self-esteem and agency and your own moral compass, self-compassion, things like that.
4:51
And then secondly, it's effective coping strategies.
4:56
So to take some time to figure out if the coping strategies you developed growing up are really serving you well or not, and if they aren't, some ideas about what you might want to try to change.
5:08
And then the other category, the other three things are all under psychological capacities, mental, emotional, and relational.

19:43
Why is it so important? Why are other people the only thing that is in here that is even moderately external over all the other available resources to us today?
7:18
Why does that unacknowledged pain tend to show up in our bodies and our minds as anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms?
7:28
Well, emotions seek an outlet.
7:33
And there's a lot of emotion that comes with grieving a loss.
7:37
And so if you can't give your understandable, natural feelings a place for some kind of release...
7:48
they get stored in your body.
7:49
And this contributes to a lot of psychosomatic illness.
7:53
So instead, it might show up as headaches or additional fatigue or gastrointestinal problems or back pain.
12:16
Is there anything in particular about these resources that can help people survive a devastating loss?
7:35
But yeah, if you wanna highlight maybe one point of each of those five, I'd love for you to do that.
7:40
Okay, great.
7:42
Yeah.
7:42
Well, and the thing I would also say, especially since this is a podcast for a lot of moms, is that what's really important is to remember as a parent that it, that you taking care of your own mental health and wellbeing is really good for your children.
7:57
I mean, you're, you become a role model, and you're also better equipped to deal with the hard parts about being a parent.
8:03
I mean, it's stressful.
8:04
I raised two children too, and so I know that that's, there's a lot of demands on us.

22 MINS LATER

30:19
Yeah.
24:10
So what happens when we avoid emotional pain?
24:14
Well, that's a good one.
24:16
So there are four other categories of what makes up good mental health.
24:19
But let's go to the emotional one because I'll quickly just say what the other four things are.
24:23
So you need a foundation of good mental health or improved mental health.
24:27
You need a healthy sense of self.
24:29
You need good mental, emotional, and relational capacities.

11 MINS LATER

35:21
So what inner resources help us become mentally healthy?
