And as for the PQ, they would also want to restrict eligibility, but they would apply those

changes to CEGEP.

And the liberals are sort of going in the other direction in the sense that they're trying to open up a little bit more room for francophone students to be able to go to English CEGEPs.

Yeah, I guess like relatively speaking compared to the other parties.

So they say that they would eliminate the current rules that progressively reduce the number of spots in English CCHEPs, but they'd also want to keep the current enrollment proportions, which are 85% for French CCHEPs and 15% for English.

This is Amanda Perry.

She's a professor of English literature at Concordia University and Champlain College Saint Lambert, which is part of Cegep, Quebec's mandatory education bridge between high school and university.

I was talking to the student Mario the other day, and he was arguing that, you know, he speaks three languages.

He writes his drafts himself, and then he uses AI to do a little bit of a proofread at the end, goes back and forth between the two, decides which changes he's going to keep.

And so it's caused this real crisis in terms of how much do things like composition, things like grammar and spelling still matter.

Should we still be evaluating this in the same way? Uh, but also how can we ensure that this- there's some level of fairness and that students are doing a minimum of this work themselves?

So this year in the Cegep courses she teaches, she did more in-class assignments.

She did assign her students an essay they'd complete at home, but she added an oral defense component where the students had a 20-minute meeting with her after handing in their essays where she could ask questions and give them a grade and feedback.

I think the, uh, you know, in addition to sovereignty, the other big issue, um, Quebec issue that people look at during elections nationally is language, and I think back to all the furor over the CAQ's last big language law, Bill 96, which placed severe limits on offering provincial services in languages other than French.

Bill 96 will tighten rules on the use of French in businesses, provide more French lessons to newcomers, and limit the number of Francophone and Allophone students accepted to English CEGEPs.

And there was real pushback, of course, from Anglophones, Indigenous groups, other groups.

Uh- But now most parties are supporting it, even the, you know, Anglophone-friendly Liberals.

The, the, the French language has never been in more danger than it is right now.

And part of our plan is to," you know, th- and this is not news, "is to extend Bill 101 to CEGEPs." That's fine.

But then it just...

And, and I, I guess part of the problem, Aaron, is these guys don't know when to shut up.

Catherine and I were students in Cegep together, in fashion design.

And after we got our diplomas, we started this business on the side, not knowing actually that we were starting a business.

And I remember a course in CEGEP that I took, and I got a poor mark on a paper.

And it w- and I went back to the teacher.

I normally didn't challenge marks, but that time I, I did 'cause I thought I'd, I'd done a good job on the paper.
