Catfishing

So today we have a bit of an interesting update because we're talking about Catfishing, the TV show, which is something that I think has been off the air for quite some time, but we actually caught up with Nev Schulman not too long ago to hear about what he's been up to, as well as a bit of a reflection on his days as creating Catfish the TV show.

So Amanda, why don't you tell us all about this?

Yeah.

Have you ever seen that show Catfished?

Yeah.

I mean, some of that stuff is crazy and I'm thinking-

Yeah, what to block.

He's going to be anti-Catfish.

It's got to be a great name like Tinder Swindler, right? Is that what we're downloading?

Well, his argument is that his extensive knowledge of how to lie and cheat and manipulate people gives him the perfect skill set to create an app that's actually safe.

There's no physical affair.

Catfishing wise, they give them little bits and pieces.

You said they fatten them up and so they start getting them to buy smaller things.

They start out saying, oh, this is a great investment or they ask for money or they say, oh, I need money because this happens or that happens.

I can't see a romance forming at this stage.

Someone says, what is catfished? Catfished means, and this is not my expertise.

Someone's tricked you online by creating a fake identity or using stolen photos to pretend to be a different person.

They're normally scammers in Nigeria or something, but pretending to be soldiers in Afghanistan that are looking for romance or I don't know why it's called catfished.

Yeah.

And it's funny, I've spent, I think, the whole COVID watching Catfishing, which is one of the shows we watch all the time, and thinking, "Oh, that never happens to anybody we know." But explain how that could happen to a teenage volleyball player.

Like...

Yeah.

Yeah, they're a waste of time.
