Today is day 300 and we are studying the fifth commandment.

We will conclude by praying the Decalogue found on page 100 of the Book of Common Prayer.

who will sing joyfully because of you, as on festival days.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches in paragraph 2567.

God calls man first.

Man may forget his Creator or hide far from his face.

Holiness is not an attempt to persuade God to love us.

It is our response to the love he has already given.

The Catechism teaches that God calls every person into a mysterious encounter with himself.

Prayer is our response to that invitation.

But the church left the door open for those very small circumstances where for the good of the community, it may need to happen.

So in 2018, the church revised that passage I just talked about, which is passage 2267 of the Catechism.

And in a letter about that, here is what was said.

Now, this letter was a letter to the bishops of the church.

Modern society, in fact, has the means of effectively suppressing crime by rendering criminals harmless without definitively denying them the chance to reform.

That was a quote from John Paul II, read poorly by me.

The teaching of Evangelium Vitae was then included in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

So that phrase ended up in the Catechism as a development in the understanding of death penalty.

It is the curse of the fall.

Catechism story number 22.

Again, an appropriate catechism story for both the first and the second articles of the Creed.

These foundational stories on creation, the creation of man and the institution of marriage, the fall into sin, and today's story, the curse of the fall, are so foundational for understanding who we are as human beings, how things got to be the way they are today in the world, from God's good creation to man's fall into sin and the corruption that that brought upon God's creation.
