Catatonia

I like the shirt.

That's a Catatonia shirt.

It sure is.

Yeah, I just saw them maybe like two months ago.

For some happy ending I'd rather stay single and thin Stop doing what you keep doing to me Things are getting strange I'm starting to worry This could be a case for mother and son Things are getting strange Now I can't sleep alone I can't sleep alone.

This is Radio X. That's Catatonia, Mulder and Scully.

Just coming up to ten to nine on Friday morning.

How we doing? My name's Adam Brown and I hope you're good.

Katherine Jenkins.

Katherine Jenkins, Catatonia.

Apparently The Darkness are Welsh.

I didn't know that.

So, so this album was released in 1996 is, which is right at the peak of the whole Cool Cymru movement.

So in 1996 alone, you've got, um, the Manics with "Design for Life" and "Everything Must Go." You've got the Super Furrys with "Fuzzy Logic" and "The Man Don't Give a Fuck." You've got debut albums for Catatonia and 60 Foot Dolls.

You've got "Patio Song" from Gorky's.

Perhaps with all that happening, this album may have even been a bit overlooked at the time.

... big tears.

Oh.

Would you agree that the '90s ushered in a far healthier crossover between, uh, English and Welsh language music when you think of the bilingualism of like Catatonia, Gorky's, Super Furry's, Maelor-

Yeah

You know, that wonderful album, The Manic Street Preachers.

And look, I grew up as a kid in the era of kind of cool Cymru with the Stereophonics and The Manic Street Preachers and Catatonia.

Yeah.

Big bands at the time.

[laughs]

"International Velvet" by Catatonia.

I've gotta be honest, based on the song before.

[laughs]

Right.

Um, so yes, "International Velvet" by Catatonia.

Nu-number one in the UK album charts.

Over 900,000 copies sold.

Who doesn't know this? Um-

I know it from the Keris from Catatonia song.

Yes.

[laughs] Yes, of course.

The Lemonheads' Car Button Cloth is a new entry at 28.

Catatonia's debut album, Way Beyond Blue-

Mm

... is a new entry at number 40.
