Castel del Monte

Buongiorno a tutti.

Today's podcast continues our exploration of that magical Italian region called Puglia, and in fact addresses what is probably Puglia's most celebrated architectural monument, a structure known as the Castel del Monte.

which translates as the Castle on the Mount.

And if any of you have ever taken a survey of art history course, you have more likely than not encountered this particular structure because it's considered to be one of the greatest gems of medieval architectural history.

The Castel del Monte is a particular octagonal structure.

You'll immediately recognize it as a fortification because the eight corners of the octagon actually contain towers.

And so if you can conjure up in your minds what it is that I'm talking about, then I think you'll realize that you have, in fact, crossed paths with the Castel del Monte in your studies.

If not, simply Google it.

All right, folks, so that wraps things up for today's podcast, but we're by no means finished with our discussion of this beautiful region called Puglia.

Indeed, in my next podcast, we are going to address arguably the most celebrated of the architectural monuments in the entire region of Puglia, and that is the so-called Castel del Monte, that octagonal sort of mini fortress, which was most likely a hunting lodge for the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II.

And when you see it, you'll know what I'm talking about because it draws visitors from far and wide to admire the perfection and the beauty of its architecture.

So folks, stay tuned for plenty more.
