We talked a lot about how in Casino Royale he never really leaves the South of France.

He didn't.

Well, it would be flaming.

Fleming publishes his first James Bond novel, Casino Royale, in the United States.

Did you like the James Bond movies?

And I think the early Ian Fleming books are actually pretty good.

I think Casino Royale and From Russia With Love hold up extremely well, for instance, as books written in a kind of heightened journalistic style, which is the definition that Anthony Burgess gave to Fleming's approach to writing.

And I really got into it after that.

So partly it was the literature.

And then the glasses and all the cups, mugs, and obviously all the bottles that we see in the films.

Like when in Casino Royale, one of the biggest bar scenes that we ever seen is there.

And then I basically picked out all the bottles that were behind the bar.

And it... sometimes it's quite exciting to see what bottles did they put in that bar because that was like that was a prop that was a set

So as Fleming always worked, and it's the same with the Boodles and everything, he takes a lot of inspiration from everywhere.

And

then he was writing Casino Royale and He took the inspiration.

The Vespers, the name was from the meeting with the Colonel.

Stir it over ice, then strain it into a chilled coupe or martini glass, garnish the exact same way, and it will look identical to the original, which is the whole point.

The Vesper was created in fiction, at least, by Ian Fleming in the 1953 James Bond novel Casino Royale.

It was actually James Bond's first cocktail.

He ordered it with specific instructions, three measures of Gordon's gin, one of vodka, half a measure of a good lilet, shaken until ice cold and served with a large thin slice of lemon peel.

There may be one exception.

Ian Fleming, who was a bit like James Bond, did sort of just sit down and write Casino Royale, and I think he did it in a couple of months fairly spontaneously.

Yeah, but, uh, but he still had to get out.

He still had to go out and buy some paper.
