It was an exonym, a broad geographic label used by European cartographers to describe the vast, largely uncharted territory of North and Central Asia, stretching from the Ural Mountains to the Pacific.

This region was inhabited by dozens of diverse semi-nomadic indigenous peoples, including the Mongols, Turks, Tartars, Manchus, and the Tungsten tribes.

For centuries, Europeans knew very little about what lay beyond the Russian frontier, so Cartographers simply marked the whole immense expanse as Grand Tartaria.

Just as they labeled the interior of Africa with generic terms like terra incognita or Barbary, it was an acknowledgment of European cartographic ignorance, not a single monolithic empire.

The
