November 19th, 1996, murder in Carthage.

38-year-old mortician Bernie Tiede killed his elderly companion, Marjorie Nugent, in Carthage, Texas.

This event eventually became the basis for the 2011 film Bernie starring Jack Black.

Uh, Tiede took a .22 caliber rifle and shot Nugent four times in the back, killing her.

And he's the freshman.

So that's a big deal.

We are actually going to start with Marjorie Ann Midyette.

Marjorie was born in February of 1916 in eastern Texas, and she grew up partly in Carthage, which is pretty close to the Texas-Louisiana border, and partly in Tyler.

Marjorie spent all of her formative years in Texas growing up with two sisters and a middle class family where her mother was a teacher and her father was both a rancher, but he also ran a general store in Carthage after the family moved back there from Tyler when Marjorie was a teenager.

After high school, Marjorie went to Louisiana Tech, which is where she met Rod Nugent.

In August of 1937, when Marjorie was 21 and Rod was just about to turn 24, the two married.

And she definitely didn't need to work.

Rod was first in the oil business, which is where he became rich, and then he turned to banking, as in owning large shares of banks, which is where he became truly wealthy.
