Caroline of Ansbach

Mary I went first and paid the price for it.

I would put money on you barely having heard of Caroline of Ansbach, which has always struck me as one of history's great injustices.

For years, I worked in an office carved out of the private bedroom of her husband, George II, at Kensington Palace.

For a break, I would climb the back stairs into her private closet, open to visitors, which she packed with artistic and natural treasures, and I would wish I could have met her.
