Uh, and then, uh, I had a few more teaching positions, uh, and t- then, then I got promoted to supervisory positions way before I should have been, but no one really knew any better.

But really then, uh, after, oh, you know, a lot of, um, experience for 10 years in various positions in schools, I w- got my doctorate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and my real aha was a course, my very first very rigorous course in language taught by Carol Chomsky, who is, um, a famous linguist in her own right.

She was married to Noam Chomsky, who is, you know, like a major figure in linguistics.

And, um, she-- it was like having this great fog of misunderstanding lifted out of my brain, and all of a sudden, I could understand what kids had to do when they learned how to read, that I underst- I understood for the first time what it meant that reading was driven by and rested on language abilities.
