such a great cast it's usually all of the mike flanagan shows pretty much have the same cast in them um so this one out of all of them is my favorite i know there's the other one uh the house on the lake or whatever it is i forget what the actual title of it is but with the That one's a fantastic series too.

I will usually watch that.

All right.

We start off with Carla Gugino, who for many, many, many years was my woman crush of the year.

Mm.

Yeah.

Carla Gugino, watching this movie, I, I had a epiphany about what it is about her, is that she's a Hollywood actress, and she's mostly I guess what you'd call a supporting or character actress for the most part.

She doesn't lead a lot of things.

But whereas, like, a lot of Hollywood actresses, you know, like I'll use, like, Angelina Jolie as an example.

She's got a exotic look to her.

The premise is just suffocating.

So Jesse, played by Carla Gugino, and her husband Gerald, played by Bruce Greenwood, they go to this remote cabin to spouse up their marriage.

Right.

Gerald handcuffs Jesse to these heavy wooden bedposts.

Most of the book happens entirely in her head.

She slowly goes mad from dehydration, terror and the resurfacing of these deeply buried childhood traumas.

So how did Flanagan do what Reiner couldn't? How does he avoid the trap of just having Carla Gugino do voiceover work for an hour and a half?

He externalizes her inner monologue.

Looks like Scott Kahn is in it.

Carla Gugino.

Oh, my God.

I love Carla Gugino.

Those Italian girls,

man.

That's where I know her from.

Carla Gugino?

Yes.

Gugino, yes.

We have an incredible cast executing this.

Victoria Pedretti, Mikkel Huysman, Carla Gugino.

The dual timeline structure is the stroke of genius here because it solves the pacing problem of episodic television.

Right.

Son-in-Law, yeah, Son-in-Law.

And Carla Gugino.

And Carla

Gugino.

The camera work has to do all the heavy lifting, creeping in from the shadows, altering the geometry of the room as her mind warps.

And of course, none of this works without Carla Gugino.

Oh, she is phenomenal in this.

She has to carry the entire emotional, physical, and psychological weight of the narrative while being completely anchored to a piece of furniture.

There's a lot of, there's a lot of, like, little one-off of our characters.

Like, I don't know if you noticed that the, the Thanks, Chuck, um, both the radio and the commercial, the, the voiceover on that is Carla Gugino.

I don't know if you noticed that.
