Benjamin, when people think about the Singapore Red Cross, many still picture something quite traditional.

Blood donation, disaster relief, CPR, etc.

How different is the organisation today from the one Singaporeans might remember from decades ago?

So I think the role of the Singapore Red Cross is constantly evolving, but the fundamentals are the same.

And you asked me why is heat and first aid important.

Because many of our seniors who are living alone, and we are an aging population, a super-aged population, Many of them are overcome by heat, by dehydration, by haze inhalation.

So I think knowing CPR, knowing AD and knowing other elements of first aid is becoming more and more critical even for a situation like Singapore.

Now, you talked earlier about the complacency that we have here in Singapore, and I think that's absolutely true.

He had given CPR.

Duncan says normally when someone is given CPR after being shot, there is more blood because of compressions on the chest.

But Duncan says there was very little blood.

Well, in the phone call with 911, you hear Alex Cox say that he doesn't know how to do CPR.

And then the technician on the phone, the 911 operator, goes to start walking him through the steps.

But he didn't call for like 45 minutes.

So giving someone CPR, that's not going to do much after they've been shot in the chest and laying there for 45 minutes.

She tried to give the kid

So I was a paramedic in Toronto and Peel region for 25 years.

I was always very interested in cardiac emergencies, was an instructor at various levels for different things in terms of cardiac life support, CPR instructor, and very much an advocate for Attempting to get more people in our communities trained in CPR.

I was very aware of the randomness of sudden cardiac arrest and heart attacks in our communities after working so many years on an ambulance.

It is the most common call that an emergency call that an ambulance will respond to is a sudden death.

So for many years, I was an advocate and a CPR instructor and a paramedic.

And then in 2015, it became very personal.

I was at home and I suddenly, without warning, started to experience what I didn't recognize at the very beginning, but it turned out to be a heart attack.

And then within a couple of minutes, I was vital signs absent.

Once dragged on board, the woman and a boy wearing a life jacket appeared to be dead.

They started CPR and sounded a distress call.

The folks from the second moored ship then took a skiff to secure a line on Fred, who was still in the water, and winch him up to the deck.

He claimed he was too exhausted to climb up the ladder.

She arrived home one evening after working her flight at 8pm, spent an hour on the phone and then went outside to the pool where Fred was waiting in the hot tub.

Around 10.30pm, a next-door neighbour heard Fred yelling that John was hurt and to call the doctor and medics.

Fred gave her CPR, but she appeared lifeless to the neighbour.

Cardiac arrest occurred at 11.45pm.
