Caprivi Strip

Now bear in mind, this is Southern Africa.

So anywhere in your like, mid to southern half of Mozambique, the whole of Zimbabwe, the whole of Botswana, and the whole of Namibia, including the Caprivi Strip.

If you do get to pick up a species when you're on one of your border travels, so I had an issue when I was in the Caprivi, and I picked up Ross's Turaco, and it would not...

And the longer it takes, the more fun it is.

Because you've never been to a place that's quite exciting your first time visiting.

I remember my first time in the Caprivi.

Bismarck had previously been negotiating with Lord Salisbury for the cession of Heligoland in exchange for African territory.

Though Bismarck fell from power early in 1890, his successor Caprivi continued the bargaining and concluded on July 1, 1890, the famous Heligoland Treaty, whereby Germany obtained Heligoland and, in exchange, gave up all claim to Uganda, thus nullifying the exploit of Peters.

Zanzibar and Pemba Islands, Vitu, a district on the British East African coast hitherto claimed by Germans, Nyasaland, a region which Peters had coveted as a southwestward extension of German East Africa, and some disputed territories in Western Africa on the border between Togoland, German, and Ashanti, British.

The treaty has been described as a one-sided bargain, giving England a whole suit of clothes in exchange for a trouser button.

But Heligoland was more than a button.

It was a useful naval base for the protection of Hamburg and Bremen, and Germany got more than Heligoland.

German South West Africa was given a long and narrow extension, often called Caprivi's Finger or Caprivi's Abfall, twenty miles wide reaching eastward to the Zambesi River, on which an outlet was much desired.

German Kamerun in West Africa was extended to Lake Chad.

I bird the Caprivi fairly often, and whenever I go, I, I scan f- all along, um, for, for a cheeky blue-breasted bee-eater.

Um, another one is a bird that's been taken off a list, um, Fullyborn's longclaw.

Now may it...

It's, it's not necessarily extremely likely, but I, whenever I have time along the Caprivi, even if I'm like, especially if I'm with people, we head out to these random habitats that look really good for them.

Um, I think the majority of people birding on the Caprivi are going there for specific targets.

Um, so your, your likelihood of bumping into these weird, weird species is a little bit lower.
