Capitol Hill

So MHA fees are a fee on new development in the city's densest areas.

So if you build an apartment building on Capitol Hill or Ballard, you have to set aside a certain amount of money that goes into a fund to fund affordable housing elsewhere in the city.

Or you can build it on site, which is even more expensive generally to do.

Those fees are one piece of the development cost.

I feel, I feel like, no, but there was something instructive there, right? If you said, "Oh, I saw you at the Hartford Civic Center in 1999, and Lollapalooza came," they don't wanna talk about that.

If you talk about where's the best place to get sushi in Capitol Hill in Seattle, it's much more a conversation to their suite.

So I think I- I took something away from that, which is, like, d- a lot of times they just wanna be normal people and talk about their kids or-

Yeah

But here in Seattle, that movement took a shocking turn.

Seattle police abandoned their precinct in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, and hundreds of protesters set up a camp in the blocks around it.

A lot of people called this camp the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest, CHOP.

Early one morning at CHOP, about three weeks in, bullets started flying.

When the shooting was over, a Black 16-year-old lay dying, and a story emerged, a story that seemed like it could contradict the entire point of the protest, that people trying to protect CHOP had shot him.

I remember the shooting happened on a Monday morning, a few blocks from where I used to live in a neighborhood called Capitol Hill.

And it turns out, she wasn't the only one.

The building itself sits up on Capitol Hill in Seattle, on a corner that frankly doesn't scream haunted house.

It's a handsome three-story brick job, the kind of solid, dignified structure you'd expect to house a law office or a small museum.

There's no turrets, no wrought iron gate creaking in the wind.

Which, in my opinion, might be a more unsettling version of a haunted house.

It's not a crumbling gothic pile at the edge of town, but a respectable one on a street you'd happily buy a house on.

This is the story of a building on Capitol Hill that a group of suffragists built to change the world, that a couple of Boeing engineers turned into the most beloved art house cinema in the Pacific Northwest, and that, somewhere in between, picked up a reputation for being haunted.

The story's got a mystery woman in it, it's got a mayor, it's got an army of people over five decades who swear something in that building did not want to be alone.
