There were black areas and there were areas for the people of color and they were, they call it coloreds.

Malawa noon, right? In that colored community there would be Indians, there would be, the majority of Muslims in our community is called Cape Malay because our origins come from Indonesia.

For some reason it's Cape Malay but the origin is actually Indonesia.

So the majority, so the Indians, the Cape Malay, The Khoza were also the original people, the original people of the land was Khoza, which is also sort of, not Khoza, sorry, Khoisan, you know, and they were also people of color.

So people of color were put together.

White people had all the privileges and black people had their own communities.

This double D cleavage was most spectacularly exposed in the fierce debate that dominated Cape politics between 1884 and the mid-1890s.

In Cape Town itself, the conflict split between the largely English-speaking middle class, who advocated public health measures, sanitary reform, versus the poorer Afrikaners with a K, who in the minds of the Cape elite were lumped together with the Cape Malays.

While the richer Englishmen pontificated about being clean and healthy, they crafted an us and them philosophy with those living on the other side of the tracks, who resisted some of the measures.

This was characterized in Cape Town's municipal politics as the clash between the clean party and the dirty party, i.e. progressives clean, conservatives dirty.

In South Africa, an Afrikaans variation known as the koeksister is popular.

Another variation, similar name, is the Cape Malay koeksister, being soaked with a spiced syrup and coated in coconut.

It has a texture similar to more traditional doughnuts, as opposed to the Afrikaans variety.

A further variation is the vetkoek, which is also dough deep-fried in oil.
