Cape Charles

The type of American character has little changed.

The quieter, longer-settled communities of that day are still fairly represented by such islands of undisturbed American life as Cape Cod and Cape Charles.

The industrious and thriving built good houses, raised good crops, sent their surplus abroad and bought English goods with it, went to church and discussed politics.

In education, in refinement, in literature and art, most of the colonists had made about the same advance as the present farmers of Utah or the miners of Idaho.

Frances's doctors suggested that she get some sea air to ease the coughing and weakness.

She took Edgar along to a cottage in Cape Charles.

She seemed to get lost in the deepness, the vastness of the dark, ominous ocean.

She remained pained and sleepless.

So it was me and my boy, Matt Brown, and we just kind of that go out until the lights come on, come home.

You know, summer we were out all day just running the streets of Cape Charles or doing whatever, hanging out with our friends, going back home to eat lunch, and then going back out again, have a good time.

High school, small town.

I can't even remember how many graduated.

Mm-hmm.

And we're going there and for a few nights, and then from there we're going up to Cape Charles and camping there.

And so-

And Virginia is for beach lovers to promote the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

First landing state park in Chesapeake Bay, Cape Charles and others, along with Virginia, is for mountain lovers to promote, of course, Appalachia and the very important Blue Ridge Mountains, which in colonial times used to mark the major land border between colonial America and the wild and dangerous unexplored lands beyond.

I never would have guessed that.

The whole idea of Virginia being for lovers is not about being a place for couples to go for a saucy romantic getaway.

But I became aware of menhaden at that time.

And then I took a sailing trip out of Cape Charles, just a pleasure cruise on my own.

And it wasn't long before we were out of Cape Charles Harbor when I came across one of the biggest schools.

I think it's the biggest school of fish I've ever seen in my life.

I mean, I was amazed.

It was tagged as a 24-inch fish.

We recaptured it as a 49-inch fish.

It traveled a total distance of 1,526 miles from Louisiana to off of Cape Charles.
