everywhere west and central africa have stories of mami wata um haiti has la siren we have europe has mermaids and marrows the philippines have la sirena uh japan has the ningyo now while the descriptions change depending on where you go people living around large bodies of water are haunted by sea spirits and mermaid-like creatures for as long as anyone can remember.

Which brings me to Cantinflas.

So Cantinflas was one of the most famous entertainers in Mexican history.

This is not a small story, okay? His real name was Mario Moreno.

And if you are from a Mexican or Latin family, most likely you or someone in your family, multiple people in your family know exactly who that is.

And at one point he had a property oceanfront in Acapulco.

And eventually that ended up being that property ended up being connected to mermaids.

So apparently Cantinflas was always extremely obsessed with mermaids.
