What did you learn from Mike Eagle?

Mike, well, Mike is probably the most underrated rugby leader in my time because he was a chair when I came to Christchurch to work at the Canterbury Rugby Union and the Crusaders, and then he came to New Zealand Rugby at a time of upheaval when basically they replaced the whole board after we lost the co-hosting rights to the 2003 World Cup.

So he put his money where his mouth was and came and joined me at the national level, and then he obviously – He became a really important part of that board, and when Jock Hobbs got sick, he was the obvious replacement to take over and stay there until his term was up.

So, yeah, Mike, compassion, very down-to-earth character, no bullshit, basically.

The stunt caused significant controversy.

The Canterbury Rugby Football Union strongly criticised the move and the RNZAF immediately stood down the pilot.

The flight lieutenant, an experienced pilot with over eight years of service, was subsequently demoted to co-pilot as punishment.

The pilot later stated it was intended as a rogue attempt to show support for the match and raise the Air Force's profile.
