research.

So cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, or CHS, is basically this paradoxical reaction to people who consume a lot of cannabis over many months or years and get a reaction similar to what we call cyclic vomiting syndrome where essentially they get these horrible bouts of abdominal pain nausea vomiting and they come into the emergency department because there's really nowhere else to go when you're in that extreme discomfort often writhing of pain you can often hear them way down the hallway in the emergency department initially we didn't really know what was going on with these patients as you know cannabis is like an anti-emetic for most people they Give it to cancer patients, sometimes they smoke a joint and they feel a little more hungry or college kids get the munchies and people want to eat more.
Andrew MeltzerSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
19:42
So you know there's GI effects of cannabis and there's cannabinoid receptors throughout your body, not just in your brain, but also in your GI tract.
Andrew MeltzerSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
19:49
Initially, it sort of pumps the brakes on nausea and it increases your desire to eat.

DerekHOST
11:24
You don't want to do it anymore, but somehow you keep doing it, and you're stuck in this vicious cycle.
DerekHOST
11:30
And if it's hurting you right now for any reason, if you're having any of those CHS symptoms that I talk about, if it's ruining your relationships or if it's making you more volatile of a person, more numbed out emotionally, or if you don't have it, you become more agitated and you don't handle things the way you necessarily want to, it's a good time to reassess your relationship with weed.
DerekHOST
12:02
And it doesn't mean that you might still have those hiccups when you've been sober for a long time, but it means they happen a lot less frequently.
DerekHOST
12:14
And there's something to be said about trusting yourself again, about trusting your decisions, about being able to exercise your free will and your Your, your, your strength as a person and your decision-making and making a decision that you're proud of, rather than being stuck in that same loop of doing something that you wish you could take back, or tomorrow I'll start not smoking.
DerekHOST
16:26
You know, it's, it's tough when I post some of these videos and people say, you know, "This guy's fat.
DerekHOST
16:33
Maybe he should stop eating or eat better or go to the gym more and he'd feel better." I know I can't be angry at those people because maybe they just don't know what I went through.
DerekHOST
16:44
Maybe they don't know that I suffered every night when I would smoke too much and that I had these CHS symptoms.
DerekHOST
16:50
Maybe they just don't have the knowledge or the-- It's hard to form the compassion if you haven't gone through something like that yourself.
