Can-can

It's fantastic.

Go see it at the Can-Can.

I will be there forever.

hopefully on the 16th.

Uh, I think it's at seven 30 at the can, can highly, highly recommend going to see it and supporting not only Aaron, uh, Strand, who's been touring the movie around, uh, at different, at different theaters, like around the country.

but also to just support the Can-Can and support, you know, independent film.

It's always, always great to show your support for that.

So that is the September 16th at 7.30 p.m. at the Can-Can with a Q&A with the writer and director.

The reason I wanted to kinda, uh, kinda force that in there is 'cause I'm hoping maybe I'll have something to report on Monday if I found anything good.

Uh, I'm going to a Dolly Parton musical, Can Can Bur- not Burlesque Show.

It's at this place in Portland.

Uh, this is tonight.

I mean, this is the show that's up right now.

I don't know why this theater doesn't, um, have a eas- Okay, let's see.

Uh, "Prepare for an evening of dazzling entertainment as Can Can's Dolly takes the stage at the historic Paris Theatre.

It's, uh, inspired by the iconic Dolly Parton, delivers a high-energy blend of cabaret, burlesque," ooh, la, la, "and live musical performance.

And it's not like this My Heart Will Go On perfectly crafted kind of thing.

[laughs] Can-Can or Can-Can.

But, um, so-- And that's kinda like what's interesting about The White Stripes as well.

Sometimes his, his guitar is out of tune.

That's it.

These women come out and do a can-can.

I'm assuming from the local Can-Can 7-Eleven or whatever.

They're from a local Can-Can initiative.

The Can-Canners.

They do the dance and it's great.

My note here is that Berko is a lech.

So that sort of started me being curious about, well, what can I learn from her life as a teenager in London? So because she basically was born in India, lived in South Africa for 14 years, went to London as a 17 year old, and then did this via Europe and meeting Hermes Pan, Fred Astaire's choreographer.

She met him in Rome and that's how she got to the US because he was choreographing Can Can.

Anyway, so the whole process started with me and these articles and then I was going to fly to the US but of course COVID happened so I had to wait two years to fly.

um and then the most amazing find was actually sitting in her last boyfriend's garage in las vegas a whole box full of letters um and they were letters that juliet had written to my grandmother um by the way my grandmother lived next door to us so she was very much part of our lives and um i brought that back to south africa in 2022 i also went to interview people that's why i actually went came to the us Is that I wanted to chat to people who were there and who had little stories and things like that.

Cool.

May 7th, Cole Porter's musical Can-Can starring Gwen Verdon and Hans Conrad opens at Shubert Theater, New York City.

It runs for 892 performances and wins a Tony Award for Verdon.

Can you, can you do the can-can? That's all I ever think of.
