Today in weather history, September the 24th, 2005, Hurricane Rita made landfall in southwest Louisiana.

The Category 3 devastated several coastal parishes with the worst damage seen in Cameron Parish, where greater than 90% of several communities were swept away.

At least 120 fatalities were associated with Rita.

Hurricane Rita also spawned an outbreak of nearly 100 tornadoes across the southeastern United States.

In May, 2026, Coturas took final investment decision on Commonwealth LNG and secured $9.75 billion in project financing alongside total commitments of $21.25 billion, advancing the development of the 9.5 million tonnes per annum LNG export facility in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.

At the same time, the company's upstream business has grown to produce more than 1 billion cubic feet equivalent per day net across 280,000 acres in Texas.

Together, these milestones reflected strategy designed to connect upstream gas production with LNG export capacity, creating an integrated value chain from the wellhead to international markets.

What was once Tropical Storm Edward is now a tropical depression after being downgraded by the National Hurricane Center.

Edward is expected to bring more rain than wind to southeast Texas through today after making landfall on Tuesday in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.

It's about 30 miles south of the Cameron Parish in Louisiana, which is located right about here.

And it's moving northwest at 8 miles per hour, 30 divided by 8, roughly a little over 3 hours.

So we're talking probably just after lunchtime as it makes its final approach into Louisiana.

They're registering right around 88 degrees Fahrenheit.

That's like high octane fuel for a hurricane to really gather strength.

Now, of course, we all know this, but it's good to be reminded because it's been a while, around the counterclockwise rotation around a hurricane, this tends to push up the water, and this is a very low-lying area here, very susceptible to storm surge, so three to five feet of water above normally dry ground is a problem, especially into those susceptible communities across Cameron Parish, perhaps into the coastal areas of Jefferson County, depending on exactly where that right quadrant of the storm actually makes landfall.

You heard the mayor or rather the governor of Texas talk about the flood threat three to six inches.

Hundreds of construction workers are anticipated beginning next year, many of them expected to live in RVs for two or three years or longer.

Parish officials did their homework, and they studied how Cameron Parish, Louisiana, and Brownsville, Texas handled the same kind of surge.
