When investigators arrived, they found Jane's apartment undisturbed in the ways you would expect if robbery had been the motive.

Cash sat on a dresser.

Most of the people on it were summoned before a grand jury that convened in February nineteen sixty-nine, barely a month after the murder.

The timeline was compressed because many of the graduate students and professors were scheduled to leave the country for summer archeological digs, and prosecutors wanted testimony before witnesses scattered across the globe.

Cambridge police took the unusual step of filming Jane's funeral on January tenth, three days after the murder, scanning the faces of mourners for signs of suspicious behavior, guilt, or anything that might point toward the killer.

It was a technique used in cases where investigators believe the murderer had a personal connection to the victim.
