Sinclair FischerGUEST

I believe they're really great lifestyle tools and they've been proven to extend longevity.
Sinclair FischerGUEST
16:37
The two things that have been proven to extend longevity is limiting our calories, so calorie restriction and limiting our eating window.
speaker_1HOST
16:44
Yeah.
speaker_1HOST
16:45
So I heard about the longevity extension.

34 MINS LATER

Sinclair FischerGUEST
50:53
Um, well, you're giving yourself a whole five to you mean five days on two days off? Yeah, you're giving yourself a whole 48 hour period where the body has a complete rest.
Sinclair FischerGUEST
51:03
So if you do that over a long period of time, if you do it once, you're going to feel a little better digestive system is going to improve a little bit, it can it can help on a small scale.
Sinclair FischerGUEST
51:13
But if you were to do that more over weeks and months, or even as a lifestyle, it comes back to that whole thing of reducing calories calorie restriction and reducing the the window of time in which you eat so over time your your body's the workload is less um it allows the body more time 48 hours a week to spend energy on on repair and detoxification So it's not like it's going to work the exact same for every single person.
Sinclair FischerGUEST
51:45
And this is, I think, important thing to understand.
Ken BerryHOST

But what about that slender person in the couple? What about that person who is already at their ideal body weight? Do they need keto? Will keto make them lose too much weight? It's a valid question.
Ken BerryHOST
0:52
And if you're thinking about dieting the old way, the old calorie restriction semi-starvation way, then it's a valid question.
Ken BerryHOST
1:00
But let me explain to you a little bit in this short video about what keto actually is, what it does, and why it is the proper human diet for all humans, whether you're morbidly obese and scheduled for bariatric surgery, or whether you have a BMI of 18 and you cannot pinch an inch anywhere at all.
Ken BerryHOST
1:21
let's talk about that now if you enjoy this kind of video please take a second and click that subscribe button it's right down there somewhere and the little bell right beside it so every time I get a bright idea you'll be one of the very first people to know when I have a bright idea like this one so let's talk about this and I want to break down what keto is what it does and why you shouldn't worry about losing too much weight so most diets In fact, almost every diet you've ever heard about in your entire adult life is a calorie restriction diet.
Ken BerryHOST
1:54
That's how it works.
Ken BerryHOST
1:55
Whether it's Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Flexitarian, Ornish, Biggest Loser, they all say you have to burn more calories than you eat to put yourself in a calorie deficit.
Ken BerryHOST
2:38
Well, after you eat, you feel full.
Ken BerryHOST
2:39
You're not still looking for something else to nibble on.
Ken BerryHOST
0:13
You may know that science has known since the 1940s that if you calorie restrict an animal for the majority of its life, it actually lives significantly longer, sometimes up to 30 to 40% longer.
Ken BerryHOST
0:29
But there's a problem with the paradigm of caloric restriction.
Ken BerryHOST
0:34
That's what I'm going to talk about in this video.
Ken BerryHOST
0:36
There may be an even easier way to get the life extension benefits touted when it comes to caloric restriction without actually having to starve to death for the rest of your life to attain it.
Ken BerryHOST
0:51
I'm Dr. Ken Berry, a family physician, and I've been interested in life extension since Dr. Hayflick published his book.
Ken BerryHOST
0:59
Let's talk about this.
Ken BerryHOST
1:01
Using caloric restriction, scientists have been able to extend the lifespan of many different animals over the decades.
Ken BerryHOST
1:10
This has been proven in mice, hamsters, dogs, fish, invertebrate animals, and even in yeast.

How to increase metabolism.
Sten EkbergSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
0:02
What is metabolism? What is BMR or basic metabolic rate? What are the factors that influence your BMR? Is it better to do calorie restriction or to do intermittent fasting if you want to improve your BMR? Your metabolism is directly linked to your ability to lose weight and even more importantly it is linked to your ability to keep the weight off once you've reached your goal weight.
Sten EkbergSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
0:36
Today we're going to talk about all these factors and we're going to give you the big picture we make it crystal clear coming right up.
Sten EkbergSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
0:47
Metabolism comes from a Greek word metabo which means to change so metabolism or basic metabolic rate is the rate that you're converting fuel sources like food into energy so the higher your metabolism the higher your basic metabolic rate the more energy you produce per day.
Sten EkbergSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:05
So when it comes to metabolism and weight, your body has a set point and we'll talk more about that.
Sten EkbergSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:12
The hypothalamus also perceives if there is a lack.
Sten EkbergSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:17
It's not necessarily a real lack, but if the hypothalamus has the idea that there is a lack, then it's also going to slow down your basic metabolic rate so let's put this into context give you some examples so the most popular idea the prevailing idea the official version the guidelines from the government and every medical institution out there is that if you want to lose weight then you have to eat less and move more the calorie restriction calories in calories out if you're gaining weight you're just eating too many you need to eat less move more yada yada yada let's say that you have a basic metabolic rate of 2000 calories per day and then you decide I'm going to eat less than that.
Sten EkbergSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
5:10
So you eat 1,500 and you figure I'm going to still keep burning 2,000 so I have a calorie deficit of 500 and with that 500 calories per day times 7 days is 3,500 calories 1 pound of fat is 3,500 calories so the math says we're going to lose 1 pound a week And if we keep it up for a year, we're going to lose 50 pounds.
Jay FeldmanHOST
3:23
But so if we were to expect benefits from having more ketones available and less glucose available, that's hypothetically going to show the most in the case of brain cancer because that's an area where you're going to see the the biggest shift in those fuel availabilities so that's one thing i just wanted to mention here before we dive in and with that let's talk about a couple of papers of his The first two here actually showing that ketogenic diets didn't have any benefit when it came to cancer in these rodent models.
Jay FeldmanHOST
3:53
And instead, what they actually point to is that calorie restriction is helpful for reducing brain tumor growth and invasion compared to a standard diet.
Jay FeldmanHOST
4:02
We'll talk about what that actually means.
Jay FeldmanHOST
4:04
And it's worth noting here as well that Thomas Seyfried often doesn't recommend just a ketogenic diet, but specifically a calorie-restricted ketogenic diet.
Jay FeldmanHOST
4:13
So we'll be breaking all of that apart here as well.
Jay FeldmanHOST
4:15
And we're going to start just by taking a very brief look at this study of his titled Calorie Restriction as an Anti-Invasive Therapy for Malignant Brain Cancer in the VM Mouse.
Jay FeldmanHOST
4:24
and in this study they didn't actually look at a ketogenic diet they just looked at calorie restriction relative to what's called ad libitum feeding so the mice were able to either eat as much as they wanted or they were on a calorie restricted diet and in the study they found that calorie restriction reduced brain tumor growth and invasion So the calorie restriction itself was beneficial here.
Jay FeldmanHOST
4:47
Again, this wasn't actually looking at a ketogenic diet, but this is important because this finding that calorie restriction is beneficial is going to come up throughout a number of his papers.
Brent WallaceHOST
9:43
go.
Brent WallaceHOST
9:43
Yeah, so I mean, I guess, I mean, to a certain extent, well, there's so many things to kind of double-click on there, but just on that recent thing, I mean, I guess you're kind of making the case for calorie restriction or fasted time eating right there because it's like you want to be in taking less but i i feel something just personally with me is like when i eat more there's something about my weight actually drops like i get leaner um that's because i'm hitting the gym i'm cycling i'm running like i'm doing you know i've got a five-year-old that weighs 50 pounds and i'm hefting around
Michael J. HallGUEST
10:17
right
Brent WallaceHOST
10:18
no i'm pretty active but you know like that thing that you're talking about you know the heavier you are it's a larger metabolic toll on your body
Michael J. HallGUEST
10:29
correct
Brent WallaceHOST
10:30
what you know to get around that it is it calorie restriction that you're talking about is it time-restricted feeding is it just eating less is it higher quality foods i'd imagine would be for sure you know eliminate junk
Michael J. HallGUEST
10:44
well it's all the above Um, food is fuel.
Michael J. HallGUEST
10:47
If you're more active and you're expending calories to maintain your musculature, when you're on your site, you know, you're doing your cycling or you're doing your, your gym activity, you know, your body needs that nutrients, you know, to run itself.
Mindy PelzHOST
0:21
Let's be very clear.
Mindy PelzHOST
0:23
The fasting that I teach here on this channel, the fasting that I talk about 83,000 words in here is not calorie restriction.
Mindy PelzHOST
0:33
It is time restriction.
Mindy PelzHOST
0:36
And the reason that this is important is when you dive in and you look at things like a lot of the criticism on fasting comes from people looking at calorie restriction research.
Mindy PelzHOST
0:49
I have looked at so much fasting research in the 10 years I've been bringing fasting to you all here on YouTube.
Mindy PelzHOST
0:56
And I will tell you that when I bring you a fasting research article and all the research that's in this book, it's not calorie restriction.
Mindy PelzHOST
1:05
It is time restriction.
Mindy PelzHOST
1:07
so what i'm encouraging you all to do is to make sure that we start to mimic our primal ancestors this is how our genes our our genetic expression works best when we eat our food in a condensed period of time leaving more time for the body to repair and rest In calorie restriction, what you're doing is you're actually starting to just eat less throughout the day.
Ken BerryHOST
0:39
