Oh, and, um, did you resonate with that being important in a relationship, is knowing all those little things?

Well, I, I think that he is ...

You're maybe posing him in a slightly different way in which I viewed him.

I think that he was maybe a little bit more anal in the way that he, he was to life.

So, uh, in that, in that respect, no, I, I didn't, I didn't respond to him.

He just did it.

No, we, um, we, we, w- we, th- th- those ones in particular were in the script already, but, uh, we did two weeks of workshopping, Monica, Will, and I, on the script to find things and [censored] around and, uh, and play.

And it w- w- was a very safe environment to do so.

My, my best mate [laughs] lived there.

I didn't do anything wrong, just my, I wanted to get my charger back, and the guy was like, "You know what? I'm sick of coming to Paddy O'Reilly's anyway when I'm in Zurich."

... yeah, consuming.

I actually, I remember I tried to get a job in a pub that my mates were working in one time, and they said, "All right, well, come pour a pint." I poured the pint, and it was horrible.

The guy just looked at me and went, "You've never done that before, have you?"

great.

They're so comforting and we know the tropes and the ins and outs.

And with Will, who I think is the king of this realm, it was a no-brainer.

And to add to the ridiculousness and the mayhem of the world and go on that journey, Will was talking about after hours and uncut gems and this sort of through line that was so hectic that I just thought was brilliant to have the combination of the two together, the romance and the...

And that's what we really, that's what we love to kind of let people think.

There were a lot of things that for the first two weeks in the rehearsal, we basically had our own writer's room.

The way that Will works, he's kind of an adrenaline junkie because sometimes he'll turn up on set and he'll say, right, this scene that we've written, practised and rehearsed, we're going to scrap that, we're going to do something else.

I was just doing things in the house because your, your cadence, and you're from New York, and this guy's from New York, and there's a, you, you've got a, a spring in your step in the way you speak, I think, and I wanted him to have that, too, and, uh, and I worked with the dialect coach, Brett Tyne, and, and, and it was her recommendation, actually.

Oh.

That's an English expression, bust a...

So you have to bust a gut basically to, to get the accent in, into, into a certain place, and then you, you do, you've done two months, three months of prep work, and you go onto set, and you try to say Empire State Building, and everyone in the crew is like [scoffs].

You set up the premise for me.

It's set in a world, in an America where premarital sex is outlawed, apart from one night a year where single people have 12 hours to get lucky.

hard to do?

No, because you prep for months beforehand, and then by the time you're on set, you're just there and you're with it.

But there is a word that I didn't know how to say, which I think you're going to mention.

Well, Empire State Building.

Yeah

... energetically, [laughs] character-wise.

Um, yeah.

I mean, that was a great script, again, and that team was wonderful.

And, and, uh, David Frayne had, had the idea of the Powell and Pressburger aesthetic and, and he wanted to really tap into, uh, you know, one, those old films, you know, that, that, that we all love, and a Humphrey Bogart-esque character that I got to play.

And then this one, uh, uh, you know, was, is, is, is, is so modern and so alive and so kinetic in a completely different way to, to Eternity.

And I, I actually think that if a script is good, it doesn't matter.

Um, as you look back on your career, what is the movie that made you realize this is what you wanted to do?

What were your impressions, Callum?

So I had the opportunity to walk ahead of the group and just have a minute in there to listen to the sound of the building.

And actually, I didn't really record for long because...

As you walk in, you're cloaked in actually quite a heavy silence.

I think the artifacts and I think the wood, the material of the place, sort of really absorb the sound in there.

So you just walk into this sort of darkened space.

room of course there's no lights on and you're only getting what's coming through the windows um so you sort of see these different parts of the room lit up by the sort of dim light coming in and lighting up all these artifacts and I think that the two senses, I guess, that were really quite stimulated was smell and sight.

Was there any other things that stood out to you?

nice and vulnerable with it.

Yeah.

What scares me about this trip? There's a few things.

The more obvious ones that jump out at me about what scares me is...

But going on a journey like this is, I'm not, I've never been a fan of deep ocean water.

We're going to be in a boat for a month in very deep water with lots of things in them, large animals.

Well, it, I guess it just, I mean, this point in the, in the, in the film, we, we realize that he's actually a, a, a brilliant pianist.

And he's playing this piece to this girl who is, is his brother's girlfriend or wife.

He's trying to sleep with her, and, uh, he plays this piece badly, he says after.

And she emotes this pretense of being moved by the, the piece.

Yeah.

"I don't know if, if that's it." And I think that's what lends ...

he lends that, that mystery to you as the audience member, being, "I don't know if this is a sci-fi.

I don't know if this is a horror.

I don't know if this is a, you know, social realism drama.

I, I don't know what this movie is, but I'm there and I'm present with it." And I think that's his, you know, superpower as a director.

So this is, uh, th- the perfect example of that.

Mm.
