They had last been seen alive when Alan picked up Nicole at her residence in North Highlands at 9 p.m. on October the 26th, as he was reportedly planning to give her a ride to see friends in the town of Jackson, located nearly 50 miles away, not far from the spot where their van was found.

Their route would have required them to drive south on California State Route 49, which was near the Consumnes River, and it's been reported by some sources that a property where Allen and Nicole had planned to go camping was on the other side of the river.

One theory was that Alan may have driven the van off the highway and attempted to take a shortcut by crossing the river through the shallow water, but the tailpipe became flooded and caused carbon monoxide to build up inside the van and fatally poison the two victims.

Of course, there was immediate speculation that this was the same white Chevy van that Jeffrey had reported seeing before he was killed, so if Alan and Nicole were responsible for shooting him, they may have fled the scene in a panic and driven into the Consumnes River over 20 miles away, before they succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Before getting off, parents tell KCRA students remained on the stop bus for about an hour as more parents began arriving.

And you have this school bus, it's full of kids on the way home, totally normal stuff.

But then you have the school bus driver pulling off onto the side of Highway 49 and locking the bus down after a student wiggled their way out of the window.

And you had kids telling reporters afterwards that after that, everyone was getting wound up, but the driver said that no one was getting off the bus until the police showed up.

And so that was the way that it stayed for roughly an hour in the hot California sun as kids started calling their parents.
