California Energy Code

Got my steps in today.

It was, dude, welcome back, Title 24.

It was a, it was long.

Like, I had, like, before I got there and I left the hotel RV, it was like a black wall of just coming to my, oh, man.

They look at three things under a microscope, your fire life and safety, your structural, and your access compliance.

Uh, and then everything has to follow Title 24, which is very, very deep into your energy factor, so lots of LED lighting, uh, indoor air quality since COVID's a big thing, a lot of solid surface flooring, uh, minimize custodial chemicals by, by doing things of that nature.

Just making a low-maintenance, instructional, friendly, uh, learning environment for our, our students, you know, first and foremost, and then, uh, obviously for our staff, and then making it to where it's manageable to own from a financial standpoint for the next, you know, 50 to 75 years.

So how about the other schools? We mentioned Monroe, but I know you've got projects going on year-round practically at other sites.

And so...

Absent us doing this study, I don't know if these activities would have moved forward as fast, but I've been working with the Title 24 Codes and Standards Enhancements team for the California Energy Code update that is going to go in effect on January 1st, 2029.

Okay.

Lo and behold, what's in there? There's now a requirement for two paths, one for daylight responsive controls, more at an instantaneous level, and then an option to do DLI controls.

All the structural, electrical and plumbing plans must be completely redone.

The engineers have to recalculate the sheer values, the Title 24 energy compliance.

It's a massive domino effect.

Wow.

and the model, all these rating systems, it ended up in regulatory environments and policies with codes, building codes.

In California, we have CalGreen, Title 24 embedded in it, requiring LEDs and solar and batteries and embodied carbon, Scope 3 energy waking up to that.

But we also can see now the slope of CO2 at 430 ppm.

So we've got the world's biggest case study.

Yeah

... to meet Title 24.

Yeah.

But on commercial projects, you don't need it in Southern California in certain climate zones, which is a huge benefit.

So one of the biggest weaknesses, like what you said with a lot of people have their opinions on how it performs seismically, so I think our biggest weakness is just education.

Yeah.

A lot of architects don't know that s- a solid grouted wall meets Title 24 in most areas of California-
