Rob BreckenridgeHOST
34:46
That same poll also shows that the UCP have had a bit of a dip, and they're neck and neck with the NDP.
Rob BreckenridgeHOST
34:52
Of course, the UCP lost that by-election of what had been a safe seat in Calgary Shaw.
Rob BreckenridgeHOST
34:58
So I think this issue is dragging down the UCP.
Rob BreckenridgeHOST
35:02
I think it's become a bit of an albatross.
Jen GersonHOST
47:24
Oh, and this was also reflected just just just in the news as well.
Jen GersonHOST
47:28
Calgary Shaw was a traditionally very conservative, very conservative writing in the suburbs of Calgary.
Jen GersonHOST
47:33
It went out.
Jen GersonHOST
47:34
It went NDP.
Matt GurneyHOST
48:34
And I'm not dismissing the concerns you have about turnout because that's legitimate.
Jen GersonHOST
48:38
We'll get into that.
Matt GurneyHOST
48:40
When I look when there was that, what was that? The by-election, what was the writing? Shaw, Calgary Shaw.
Matt GurneyHOST
48:45
When I saw the Shaw by-election results, when I saw more of an anecdotal indicator, but when I saw a fairly conservative identified mayor of Calgary coming out loud and proud against some of this insanity, when I've started to see very belatedly, even just this week, some of the business community in Alberta saying we're not in favor of this, looking at Carney's approval ratings, approval of trump like every anecdotal indicator that we've got is pointing in one direction here and they're all aligned with each other seeing the provincial party support coming down It didn't surprise me.
Jason MarkusoffGUEST
19:53
Yeah, the UCP has not been looking forward to the numbers of these polls.
Jason MarkusoffGUEST
19:58
And we saw the seeds of this with the Calgary-Shaw by-election.
Jason MarkusoffGUEST
20:01
This by-election in southwest Calgary where what seemed like it was a safe UCP seat was flipped a couple weeks ago to the NDP seat.
Kathleen PettyHOST
20:08
And dismissed as an outlier by some partisans, but this would suggest it wasn't an outlier.
Lauren McGinnisHOST
1:48
What do you think?
Ian BrodyGUEST
1:50
Well, as you were saying with Janet Brown in the last hour, I think it further reinforces that the Calgary-Shaw by-election we spoke about last week is not a one-off, is not kind of an isolated event.
Ian BrodyGUEST
2:05
If the UCP is of the view that in a general election, they could go back to the campaign they ran last time around, I think that would be a mistake.
Ian BrodyGUEST
2:17
There's special trouble here in a couple of different places.
Ryan JespersenHOST
20:12
What do you think's behind all of it? It's kind of like a almost like a parent child type vibe, isn't it?
Jeremy FarkasGUEST
20:19
You know, I just want to get back to partnership, right? And I think the Calgary Shaw by-election knows what happens when you take Calgarians for granted, when you take voters for granted in what should be a UCP stronghold.
Jeremy FarkasGUEST
20:31
So I want to get to the point where, you know, I'm not going out with a jackhammer destroying infrastructure.
Jeremy FarkasGUEST
20:36
I want to go out filling potholes.

Ryan JespersenHOST
27:10
Let me say 15 minutes, in fact, as we're hanging out with these two, the mayors of Calgary and Edmonton, before they head over to the A.B. Muniz Political Convention.
Ryan JespersenHOST
27:18
It's the convention and trade show, the annual one that brings together elected officials from across the province.
Ryan JespersenHOST
27:24
I want to circle back on the Calgary Shaw by-election result.
Ryan JespersenHOST
27:26
Mayor Farkas touched on it briefly, but there's more to go there.
Amber RuddyPANELIST
11:13
When there has been a separatist candidate against incumbents, the separatists have lost so far.
Amber RuddyPANELIST
11:19
And, you know, we look at this Calgary Shaw by-election situation.
Amber RuddyPANELIST
11:23
Not to say that I would argue that this is not necessarily like a safe conservative seat because this was held by the NDP before Minister Rebecca Schultz had resigned.
Amber RuddyPANELIST
11:34
So they're in the cities, they're urban Calgary.
Amber RuddyPANELIST
15:14
Like, I think these people are going to get super angry with the result.
Amber RuddyPANELIST
15:18
And I think they're going to self implode.
Amber RuddyPANELIST
15:21
There's other dynamics at play too, right? So when you look at even Pete Guthrie's party, the Tory party, they peeled off enough votes in the Calgary Shaw by election to be concerning was, I don't know how many Calgary seats were, it was like within 2,500 votes that if they would have flipped to the NDP in the last election, we would have had a NDP government.
Amber RuddyPANELIST
15:44
And if you have the introduction of other factions like this Tory party that's, you know, also worried about different grievances and they have, you know, with Pete Guthrie and the AHS procurement issues that he raised, if they start to peel off that percentage, the more conservatives are divided, the more they're going to lose.
Zain VeljiHOST
16:56
Carter, can I keep it on you for a second and then we'll move on to BC.
Zain VeljiHOST
17:01
I didn't get a chance to ask you about Calgary Shaw because you weren't around last episode.
Zain VeljiHOST
17:06
How big of a deal is that for the NDP and how big of a dent does that cause Danielle Smith? I'm curious, especially within the confines of this conversation, her message, her frame, her separatist, her party, all those things.
Zain VeljiHOST
17:19
Talk to me about your read on that and what that means for her.
Zain VeljiHOST
17:25
shocked.
Stephen CarterHOST
17:25
I mean, it was a big deal for the NDP to win.
Stephen CarterHOST
17:28
It is a big deal for them to put an MLA from Calgary Shaw.
Stephen CarterHOST
17:34
The last time they put an MLA from Calgary Shaw, it was because there were three primary campaigns, right? There was the Progressive Conservatives, the Wild Rose and the NDP, and they barely snuck in by getting the most votes.
Naheed NenshiGUEST
15:24
So our job right now, the referendum is 51 days from today as we're speaking.
Naheed NenshiGUEST
15:29
There is a by-election in Calgary Shaw in 16 days.
Naheed NenshiGUEST
15:34
These are, oh, I should say there's a by-election in Calgary Shaw in 16 days.
Naheed NenshiGUEST
15:41
And If you are lucky enough to live in South Calgary, you have the opportunity to send the government a big message.
Naheed NenshiGUEST
15:50
The government's not gonna change after this by-election, though we wish it would, but there is a real opportunity to tell the premier this is not good enough.
Tom ParkinHOST
15:53
And also some good news here in Calgary last week.
Tom ParkinHOST
15:56
The Alberta NDP won the Calgary Shaw by-election.
Tom ParkinHOST
16:00
the UCP were expected to win.
Tom ParkinHOST
16:02
The NDP took it 47 to 43% in a riding.
Tom ParkinHOST
16:29
whether the two smaller parties took votes that would have gone to the NDP if they hadn't fielded candidates, if those smaller parties hadn't fielded candidates, or whether, conversely, they created a place for past UCP voters who aren't going to vote for the NDP to put their vote in protest, or maybe a mix of both.
Tom ParkinHOST
16:48
I think it's just something for the parties in Alberta to reflect upon tactically.
Tom ParkinHOST
16:54
But either way, Voters in Calgary Shaw delivered a rejection notice to Smith and put her behind the ball just five weeks before the referendum on separation on October the 19th.
Tom ParkinHOST
17:10
Okay.
MartyHOST
34:28
All right.
MartyHOST
34:29
So what was the other story last week I wanted to talk about? Closer to Home wanted to talk a little bit about the Calgary Shaw by-election on Monday.
MartyHOST
34:40
I was a little surprised.
MartyHOST
34:43
John, do you have a chart real quick that can show the results? Sure.

10 MINS LATER

MartyHOST
44:26
So was this just the way because if you look at it, it kind of appears as if the conservatives didn't go out and vote.
MartyHOST
44:32
The UCP didn't go out and vote nearly as much because this writing was a big, strong, conservative writing in the last couple of elections.
MartyHOST
44:41
Now, mind you, Calgary Shaw is in the very far south end of Calgary, and it's where the city's growing.
MartyHOST
44:49
And I think the immigration population in Calgary Shaw is about 30 to 40 percent.
