Calenardhon

The Dunlendings suffered, like all the peoples of Arnor and Gondor in the Great Plague of the years 1636-1637 of the Third Age, but less than most, since they dwelt apart and had few dealings with other men.

Meanwhile, the northern part of Gondor, Calenardhon, became nearly depopulated, and the Unfinished Tales says...

And in our episode on the Rohirrim, we talked about how Cirion the Steward sought the aid of Eorl the Young and his people in his war against the Balkoth.

Then following the victory at the Field of Celebrant, he granted Eorl and his people the lands of Calenardhon as a reward and in exchange for their fealty.

Now this was something that was done without the consent of those people of mixed Dunlendish heritage, which caused some unrest in the new kingdom, which was exacerbated by the actions of the second and third kings of Rohan, and we read in the Unfinished Tales.

But under Brago and Aldor, the Dunlendings were rooted out and driven away beyond the Aizen, and the fords of Aizen were guarded.

At the least we must defend Eriador about the Long Rivers west of the mountains that we name Hith- Hithaeglir our chief defense.

But in that mountain well there is a great gap southward in the land of Calenardhon, and by that way inroad from the East must come.

Already enmity creeps along the coast towards it.

It could be defended and assaulted, an assault hindered did we hold some seat of power upon the nearer shore.
