One relatively recent book that covers a lot of contemporary science on language diversity and the relation between language and cognition is a book by my friend and mentor Caleb Everett, A Myriad of Tongues, How Languages Reveal Differences in How We Think.

I'm clearly biased, as I said, he's a friend and he covers a lot of my research, but as objectively, as subjective as I can be, I can tell that he's a fantastic writer and that is a great book.

Thinking more in general about the dynamics of culture and the relation between history, culture, and human psychology, even if it's a non-trivial time investment, I would recommend people to read The Secrets of Our Success by my also mentor, Joseph Henrich.
