Cal Nichols

We're happy to have them back in the fold.

Cal Nichols passed away, and I know it was a, a, a couple days ago.

Um, but we haven't had pods, haven't had a chance to get into it.

Uh, Cal, uh, from Saskatchewan, came here after, uh, building, uh, a, a business acumen, and what he'll be remembered for is for the role he had, um, helping get the ticket drive to get over the quota so they'd get some financial support from the NHL, and the Edmonton Oilers were able to stay here, and they thrived, leading to, you know, the 2006 run to the Stanley Cup Final.

He became chairman of the club for a, a number of years, 10 years, I think it was.

The, um, so many impressive things he did.

Daryl Katz, uh, is, is quoted as saying in the past, "If it wasn't for Cal Nichols, the Oilers wouldn't be in Edmonton." I think it's time for us to take a look at, uh, the Ring of Honor for Cal Nichols.

Cal Nichols, um, yeah, not a player, but there are other people in that, in, in, in, in, uh, well, Rod Phillips upstairs, uh, with his re- being retired.

Yeah, look, uh, and I think you knew we were going to do this, but we'd be remiss without discussing the passing of Cal Nichols.

Uh, you were the captain of the Edmonton Oilers for a large amount of time during the time in which the Edmonton Investors Group, uh, owned the team, and I know you had many dealings with Cal over the years.

There is lots to talk about.

But, you know, we are we're going to we had yesterday Patrick LaForge and Kevin Lowe on the show to talk about the passing of Cal Nichols.

You were the head coach of the team when Cal and the Edmonton Investors Group owned the team.

Cal was later a alternate governor for Daryl Cates when Daryl purchased the team from the EIG.

And so we all had great relationships with Cal.

I mean, I was under no illusion as the coach that if I screwed up, he was going to let me go because, you know, he he was fully capable of doing doing the tough things.

But when when I think about leadership skill, I think of, you know, Cal Nichols at that juncture, Kevin Lowe, you know, Patrick LaForge, those guys were really all on the same page.

And, you know, as from a coaching standpoint, you want the support of the organization from the ownership right through to the president and the general manager.
