Yeah, that actually really happened in Chicago.

Cabrini Green,

which is

gone now, thank God.

While researching urban legends, she familiarizes herself with Candyman, a spirit who kills anyone that speaks his name five times before a mirror.

She learns of a recent murder at the Cabrini-Green Homes Public Housing Project and several others that have been attributed by locals to Candyman.

Skeptical, Helen and her friend Bernadette Walsh repeat Candyman's name to Helen's bathroom mirror to no avail.

You know, look, I'm the kind of guy, I don't believe in this stuff.

So it's implied that he's been cheating on her the entire time, and then he just takes the...

Yeah, so Helen returns to her apartment to find Trevor now living with one of his students, Stacy.

Helen confronts him, then flees to Cabrini-Green to rescue Anthony.

When she finds Candyman in his lair, he informs Helen that her surrender to him will ensure Anthony's safety.

Helen says, can I talk to your friend? And it's another person on the cleaning crew.

So the friend comes in and we hear this terrifying story of Ruthie Jean, who had an apartment in Cabrini Green.

And Candyman, while she was taking a bath, Candyman came in through her, the mirror on her medicine cabinet and killed her.

And though she screamed and though people called 911, no one did anything to help her.

So she shows before they go to Ruthie Jean's apartment, she shows Bernadette that she can take out the medicine cabinet in her bathroom and you can get into the next apartment that way because of how cheaply it has been made.

This is something that she discovered through her research.

They go to Cabrini Green.

They go into Ruthie's apartment and it is just horrifying.

It was set in Liverpool and dealt with British class systems, so it still, it was pointing out class systems, but this is just a complete coincidence.

Filmmaker Bernard Rose relocated the story to Chicago's Cabrini Green housing project to explore themes of American race.

Um, the character of Candyman is the supernatural urban legend that we were.

So it's just separate.

So that's kind of a lot of self-made stories in the data.

And, you know, we tell some of these stories individually, like Dick Portillo from Chicago, who started out growing up in the Cabrini Green housing project and started a hot dog stand.

He didn't actually know how to make hot dogs at the time.

He didn't know how to steam a bun.

One that I think you mentioned briefly was the story of Dick Portillo, which is one of my favorite stories in the book.

When we talked to him, he grew up in the Chicago Cabrini-Greens housing project, and he's the son of Mexican and Greek immigrants.

He went to the Marines, didn't go to college.
