Cabrini–Green Homes

I mean...

I actually was not even in this tournament, so I don't want a false claim, but some of my friends played in the classic at the old Cabrini Green, the legendary project in Chicago.

The

buildings are 30, 40 stories high.

I'm going to go Curtis Mayfield versus John Prine.

I'm going to go Cabrini Green versus Maywood.

John Prine, the singing mailman, Old Town School of Folk Music legend.

He wrote so many songs for so many years, decades and decades.

Let's see.

Where's the Cabrini Commons? The Cabrini Green in Chicago is kind of a rough neighborhood.

Okay, looking up here off of the 5 Freeway there.

... and I'd b- flew through the airport quite a few times, but I'd never drove in Chicago.

And it w- it's just a little bit past downtown when Cabrini-Green was still there.

Go by Cabrini-Green and go on up to Armitage off Halsted, and, uh, we pull in the back alley, and, uh, the chef and his, uh, sous chefs are grabbing the pig.

They're starting to break it up, and, uh, they're showing us around the restaurant.

And this farm boy that was not involved in the foodie scene at all figured out really quick this was a really, really nice restaurant.

Just saying.

I mean, when they were talking about growing up in Cabrini Green, I could see Leslie being

like, oh my

God, I wish I could have been there.

Others were moved into high-density towers in the park-like setting, inspired by architects like Le Corbusier, who I've mentioned.

And this happened in New York, Cabrini Green in Chicago, Pruitt-Igoe, apartments in St. Louis that some of you have heard of.

I think this is Pruitt-Igoe, right? This is the planning of Pruitt-Igoe.

And this, again, these are based on this mechanistic, technocratic vision of the person in society.

And it's interesting, depending on who you talk to in my family, one person will say that was just such a revolutionary act, right, to sell to a Black family and to allow them to get into a neighborhood they probably wouldn't have been able to get into.

Most of my family grew up a few blocks from Cabrini Green.

So that sounds good.

On the other hand, how interesting is it that they had to pay with no contract, nothing on paper before they were able to actually get title ownership to the home? So there is a big history of the hoops that we have to jump through.
