Butterfly effect

In chaos theory, the phenomenon whereby a minute change in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere is commonly referred to as the butterfly effect.

To put it simply, a butterfly could flutter its wings in Rio de Janeiro, which would cause a tornado in Chicago.

Remember that, Mr. Eccles? Alexander the Great? Napoleon? Hitler? None of that have ever existed.

The butterfly effect was first defined by Edward Lorenz, a meteorologist and mathematician.

He introduced the concept in the 1960s while studying weather patterns, illustrating how a simple small change in initial conditions could lead to significant differences in the state later on.

It's just that to settle the case, we need a bigger detector.

The butterfly effect is much stranger than we thought.

A group of researchers just showed that if you take into account quantum physics, then it doesn't just make predictions difficult.

It makes predictions impossible after a certain time.

The flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil could set off a tornado in Texas.

More formally, if you start with two initial states that are just a tiny little bit different, then over time, the difference between them can grow dramatically.

This part of the butterfly effect is quite well known.

But few people knew that this actually wasn't Lorenz's point.
