I never listened to the black metal.

I, you know, I grew up, I'm not, I'm from the town where Burzum, he grew up, you know, on my block.

He was a little older than me.

Uh, some of the most notorious people.

Maybe in the interview or something.

But, like, a certain version of Burzum was important for Hubris Unchained.

And...

I was more into older 70s and 80s rock from the beginning.

But we knew about this history about black metal and all the tragedies that happened during the 90s and all these this mystique and sort of it was sort of forbidden forbidden fruit and you get drawn towards it of course like everything that's not allowed you have to explore uh and for me that was it started off with uh with demo which was easy to listen to and from there on it was more of going towards the path of both Bursum and Mayhem and the more extreme sights of the Norwegian black metal scene.

And Mayhem has a very special place in my record collection.

as it's so well written and the musicianship is just phenomenal.

Bands like Nocturnal Mortem and Kodu and things.

um i would say bands like Graveland, bands like Burzum, i don't think they are NSBM although there's obviously you know connections with the individuals involved but as you said like the music itself is not explicitly political in any way and also i think those bands they are still kind of household names, particularly Burzum.

You can't really get into black metal and just ignore the legacy of Burzum and a lot of those other bands that kind of flirted with it.

By the mid to late 90s, it starts to become its own kind of thing, a sort of isolated community within black metal.

But this was also a time when you could be a little bit more open about these kind of things it was still you know incredibly edgy and it would get your ostrich thighs from the made the sort of musical community even within metal um but you could kind of float with it a lot more and still expect your music to be distributed relatively widely and i think that does spread into the mid to late 2000s where you know even even later than that you have like people like Anthony Fantano covering bands like Decibel Inigo, Pest Noir, and even Burzum at one point as well.

And then later on, a few years later, he obviously got like hounded by his like followers saying, you need to take these reviews down.

You can't cover these bands.

And the mood very much changed.

Um, love the look of it.

Um, Burzum, Filosofem.

Uh, there is, uh, you know, it, it, it's such a different album cover considering the style of music and considering, you know, what album covers generally tended to look like, uh, at that time.

And, uh, I mean, I, I think Filosofem and, and in particular, Det Glade, to me that is just absolutely quintessential black metal.
