Burning

I mean...

it almost feels redundant to talk about how brilliant it is because it's Lee Chang Dong and I mean it was by far my most anticipated film of this festival and I think it's like it's certainly the best film in the festival and possibly the best film of the year it's really tremendous and it's really one of those again a little bit I mean it's probably less of a punch than Burning because Burning had those sort of which is Lee Chang Dong's previous film from eight years ago which was in Cannes And Burning had those sort of noirish love triangle elements and that sort of that bluesy noirish feeling, which this does not have.

This is, I mean, ostensibly it's a relationship drama again.

So this is kind of less hooky in that way.

That's also sort of distinct from the first half of the film, I think, which has this almost brittleness you're feeling about the family.

And there's also a touch of some of this...

I don't know, kind of mystical magic thing that happens in Burning.

I fell a couple of times here as well.

I wasn't...

I mean, I wasn't in the city when Burning came out.

So I really don't know.

But that wasn't a Netflix movie.

Well, I hope I have an opportunity to see it soon.

So let's turn to a movie that is somber, and I don't necessarily mean that in a negative way, and that is Lee Chang Dong's much-awaited follow-up to Burning, which was, what, 2017, 18? 19, 2019.

Something like that.

And yeah, so it was exciting to see a new film by him.

Like he buys companies, you know, it's, it's a little overdone.

I guess that's true.

But I mean, that element is also in Burning, I would say, right? I mean, Burning is a film I love, except I actually do think that it is a very imperfect movie because I think it doesn't end well.

But

Director Lee Cheng-dong's latest film, Possible Love, received a thunderous seven-minute standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival following its world premiere.

The film, Lee's first in eight years since Burning, tells the story of a laid-off worker and his wife, who meet a documentary director and her husband, leading them to confront hidden desires.

International critics showered the film with praise, with Vulture calling it the most powerful and captivating work of Lee's career, and IndieWire awarding it an A-grade while specifically highlighting John Doyon's once-in-a-century performance.

The film is competing for the Golden Lion Award, with results to be announced at the festival's closing ceremony on September 12th.
