In the early hours of May 2nd, 1996, a young couple were inside a quiet bungalow on the Pentrosfa estate in Llandriddod Wells.

It was an empty property that Fiona Ovis had access to, and for the previous few weeks she'd been using it as a private place to meet William Crompton away from the eyes of her family.

But that night, somebody else was about to arrive at the bungalow.

and what happened inside would leave both Fiona and William dead in one of the most frenzied attacks detectives in Mid Wales had ever seen.

The investigation quickly centred around a complicated web of relationships, jealousy, and a young man whose life had already been blighted by years of isolation and serious personal problems.

Within hours, police had a suspect, and the evidence appeared to point towards a horrifying motive.

But when the case eventually reached court, questions were raised about the killer's state of mind, what had happened in the moments leading up to the murder, and whether he was truly responsible for his actions in the way the prosecution claimed.
