Ambler specialised in novels where the protagonist has got some other profession entirely.

And it's kind of propagandistic.

I think you can really see the advertising executive in Ambler here because he really uses a lot of devices to make us like Zalashov and his sister.

He doesn't make him a Bulldog Drummond.

He doesn't make him a James Bond type.

Now, when I talked about The Man Who Knew Too Much in the podcast on The Diplomatic Corpse, I mentioned that it stemmed out of Hitchcock's interest in doing a Bulldog Drummond film.

That association got me interested in other unrealized films that Hitchcock had at one time intended to do.
