Bulgars

Long before the days of Genghis Khan, this lateral expansion of the Turco-Mongol race and their pressure on the peoples who lay to the west had produced barbarian invasions which overran Europe and overthrew the Roman Empire, culminating in the invasions of the Huns.

The Bulgars and the Magyars of Hungary are of the Turco-Mongol race, as are the Cossacks of southern Russia.

Yet though long separated, these offshoots retain the instincts and characteristics of the race.

They settle only in open level country, the plains of Hungary, the steppes of Russia, which recalls their ancestral past.

Finnish tribes seem at one time to have been the dominant race in what is now Russia, and indeed much further west, but they were like the Celts unfortunate in never being able to permanently establish an independent and united state capable of resisting pressure from Teuton or Slav or Turk.

The Magyars, it is true, were of Finno-Ugrian origin, and so probably were the Bulgars, but one can hardly regard Hungary and Bulgaria of today as Finnish states.

In the north and north-east of Russia there are still Finnish tribes little, if at all, removed from the nomadic stage.

All through the empire there are millions of them who have become Russians.

But the defeat of Attila did not by any means put an end to the series of migrations.

The Huns were followed by the Lombards, the Lombards by the Bulgars, and between them they changed the maps and the very place names of Europe.

Yeah, and just so they know, the Huns, obviously, the Huns we know about, who probably had, from Central Asia, putting pressure, again, probably an expansion out of what is now Mongolia.

But the Voltiger Wanderung, that's literally the Germanic people's migrations, which is a huge part of what destroyed the Roman Empire.
