Build Canada Homes

We can't just throw money at a problem.

But Carney, through the major projects office, through Build Canada Homes, is trying to do the big long-term things at the same time as he's doing the short-term things.

I am not on the party payroll by any stretch, but $7.5 billion is not nominal, is not window dressing, and isn't by any stretch just rhetoric.

But I appreciate where everybody's coming from.

Yeah, just on that point of symbolic versus substantive, I think you'd be looking ahead to the fall legislative agenda federally, as well as the budget to see, just to give a few examples, Build Canada Homes, a lot of subsidization, even of taking over the cost of development charges, which make up a huge portion of the price tag on a new house.

But we know the underlying problems are lack of supply and the dense network of complicated zoning, permitting, building code, what have you, rules.

And Alberta is getting more than 1,400 new affordable homes thanks to a deal announced this week.

Ottawa will provide up to $220 million through Build Canada Homes, while the province will pay up to $165 million.

The units will be spread across 21 planned housing projects and will include supportive and transitional housing.

These are projects that will help Canada build bigger, move faster and trade more with the world.

He wants to double the grid by 2050, which is like 25 years from now.

But what are you doing right now? How are you making life more affordable for Canadians who are struggling right now? The tax-funded essentials and grocery rebate? How are you dealing with the housing crisis? The Build Canada Homes program, which will only produce 25,000 homes.

It's a subsidy that we are paying for.

Oh, and don't forget about him bailing out condo developers with our money.

But I think we have to start investing in this space.

And I think hoping and praying that the province is gonna show up with money or hoping and praying that Build Canada Homes is gonna cut us a giant check in order to build all sorts of affordable housing is a folly.

And it's gonna lead us to waiting and these issues are gonna continue to compound and they're gonna get worse.

And that's a tragedy for our community.

So there have been, over the past year in particular, some really important steps forward here.

Build Canada Homes is launched in September as a concept and now very real across the country.

Legislation that passed at the end of the session in May and June that gets that going.

The entire Canada Lands Corp portfolio of federal land is now moved into that.

that's an area with huge upside in greater Vancouver and certainly on the North shore building major projects that help get our electricity grid doubled in this country in really quite short order.

2050, uh, to do that is, is a really tight timeline, but has huge importance for getting to our net zero goals and building a competitive economy.

Now, uh, And these things all tie together to a commitment of him to buy Canadian again, to use more of our own materials, even in things like build Canada homes that I mentioned with modular housing, prefab, mass timber that build more of what we make here.

And we just have to be able to stand on our own two feet as a country a little bit more than we have for very many decades.
