Today, a Homeland Security job affair kicked out of the Buffalo Convention Center has a new home.

As today signals the end of a two-day Department of Homeland Security career expo relocated from the Buffalo Convention Center to the U.S. Coast Guard Station near the Buffalo Lighthouse, there remains one question.

How did this happen? Did someone take a good look at the participating agencies or the fine print? For example, County Executive Marksy Poloncar said THS didn't provide the required deposit and struck the standard liability provision from the contract.

Why wasn't the Immigration and Customs Enforcement participation flagged so that an alternative venue could have been found earlier? The uproar began after word spread that the career expo would include recruitment for ICE.

Pulling cars explained that the county owns the Buffalo Convention Center building, but does not manage daily operations or event booking.

The Buffalo Niagara Convention Center Management Corporation, BNCCMC, was created to manage the facility including contracting bookings for all events.

BNCCMC, he added, entered into the contract with DHS.

Poland Cars and Buffalo Convention Center President and CEO Patrick Kaler said they had ongoing concerns about public safety and security at the event in light of anticipated protests and counter protests.

The Department of Homeland Security Career Expo in Buffalo is still happening tomorrow, Wednesday, just not at the Buffalo Convention Center.

And while the new location at the U.S. Coast Guard station near the Buffalo Lighthouse has settled a local question, the political drama and commentary is nowhere near dying down.

That includes the recruitment of federal immigration enforcement personnel, among other agencies, Poloncarz said.
