Bryan Lee O'Malley

soundtrack's gotta be killer

Brian Lee O'Malley is involved with the game.

Yeah.

It's an original story.

And I love it so dearly.

By Brian Lee O'Malley.

And he...

It's kind of like a slice of life comic, you know, where it's more down to earth.

Um, 'cause Scott Pilgrim vs. the World actually was based on a preexisting property.

It was based on a pretty popular American published manga series by a guy named Bryan Lee O'Malley, and it's a series that does have a pretty substantial cult following.

My theory is this.

I know tons of people who have seen Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

So here's your chance to order a cover, a copy of issue one if you didn't get it.

I think a lot of people will be interested in this next one from Brian Lee O'Malley.

we've got a new Scott Pilgrim comic.

Scott Pilgrim X, Dawn of Metal Scott, number one, coming from Oni.

First new Scott Pilgrim book in decades, I believe.

This is leading into, there's a Scott Pilgrim video game coming, and this is kind of a prequel to that.

So again, if you're a fan of Brian Lee O'Malley, Scott Pilgrim, Probably want to order this.

I expect this will sell out too because I think it's one of those things that's going to fly under people's radar.

The tonal contrast between The Crow and Scott Pilgrim could not be starker, yet they share a remarkably similar trajectory from a deeply niche indie creation to a massive cultural phenomena driven entirely by passionate fan bases rather than studio marketing.

Scott Pilgrim was created by Bryan Lee O'Malley.

The text notes it won the 2006 Eagle Award for favorite original graphic novel.

It is a six-volume series, and the premise is so incredibly kinetic and fun.

He has to literally defeat her seven evil exes in video game style combat.

In 2010, it was adapted into the film Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, directed by Edgar Wright, and the success of that film spawned a video game and even prompted a re-release of the original black and white graphic novel series in a full-color hardback edition.

What Bryan Lee O'Malley achieved with Scott Pilgrim was capturing a very specific millennial video game infused zeitgeist.

It was a deeply personal reflection of a certain subculture, indie music scenes, retro gaming nostalgia, the aimless anxieties of being in your early 20s.

What a treat.

I mean, your first three artists, right, were Nick Pitarra, Bryan Lee O'Malley, and Nick Dragotta.

And I, I imagine to some degree, because, like, y- you said Nick talks.

Nick talks to everybody.

Um, and I'm, I'm very flattered by that, very grateful for that.

Uh, Bryan was someone I had known.

And, um, believe it or not, even though Scott Pilgrim was already done and he was, he was the Bryan Lee O'Malley, he needed help.

So I talked to Bryan, and Bryan was-- Bryan's very easygoing.
