Brown Girl Dreaming

The theme for Banned Books Week is Let Books Be, Protect the Freedom to Read.

I'm reading Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson and will attend a virtual author talk with her through my library.

What are your banned books plans? I want to know.

838 days left.

I think a lot of people really don't do that for gifts anymore, and it's something that will probably frustrate a child but is exactly how I started 1000 Black Girl Books.

I was given Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, and that was what began all of my kind of interest in representation because I felt very seen by her story.

I had never really considered, um, books about Black girls, and I think the title is also what is really powerful about it, is that literally it was just like Brown Girl.

So I was like, "Oh my God, that's me." Um, so giving books to children is a really important thing.

Oh, yeah.

Like A Brown Girl Dreaming.

Oh my God.

Read that like on the floor while my children played and destroyed the art museum's kid center because I couldn't stop reading it.
