The evidence for the use of BAT acutely, for example in an operating theatre following aspiration on induction of anaesthesia, has been limited to case reports with favourable outcomes.

Bronchial suctioning without toileting following an aspiration appears logical and may be a more accepted practice.

While this may assist in clearing an airway, the addition of toileting may be more effective in removing residual material and decreasing subsequent chemical or immunological repercussions.

There is some evidence that fluid lavage of the lungs rather than suction alone improves respiratory outcomes although further research is required.
