And you haven't seen Bringing Out the Dead, right?

It's one of my favorites of Scorsese.

We talked about Bringing Out the Dead a couple of years ago on the pod and also directed by Scorsese and written by Schrader.

New York movie, right? All those things.

But that doesn't feel like a guy who's discovering as he's directing.

I'm not sure he would be the right director for this level of psychological scrutiny this film has when it comes to the Travis character.

But at least from a visual standpoint, he would, I think, do a very good job.

So there's a part of me that thought keep Scorsese because I mean it was just a couple years earlier he does bringing out the dead which is very much a companion piece to this film and it's excellent right so he would be able to still do it but I also thought but at this point he is competent in terms like he knows exactly how to move the camera where he wants it and like part of what makes this film work so well is because there's a bit of like we're seeing earlier the discovery So I actually wound up thinking the right person would be Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, who had already made Amoros Perros at this point, had not made yet 21 grams, but he would have had that kind of young sort of attacking quality that I think Scorsese has in his directing here, and he would have been willing to kind of just dive into the dark place.

Because I was thinking about your point, Brian, about how the post 90s New York right and pre 9-11 New York would have been a very different world than what we're seeing here so you to really make this feel like this is a world you need a director who's going to be willing to hunt down those spots where there still is this kind of decay and can kind of convincingly show it to you and I thought Iñárritu would be the the person of that moment that would have been the right person for it so that's who I would have hired to make this movie in 2001 it's a

On any given day, that order would swap around.

I've watched The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver in the last month, and I think either would be a good best Scorsese movie.

Bringing Out the Dead, though, is just so fucking good, and I'm a con- enough of a contrarian that I want it to be Bringing Out the Dead to be my favorite because it's, like, less common.

Um, so yeah, it's, uh, he slows down his working pace a lot and, uh, I don't think that's a coincidence given this film.

Where were you able to watch Bringing Out the Dead, Sarah?

It is not streaming anywhere in the UK, but it is rentable on Prime and Apple, I think.

I don't know if he was a doctor, but he was a paramedic.

And there's a great, I think one of my favorite movies with Nicolas Cage is a movie called Bringing Out the Dead.
